Which "budget" package to start?

$499 can get me either a Model 11fxp trophy hunter with regular profile barrel or an 11vt. I know they both have the Axis bottom metal but I can replace that. The gun would see a little hunting and a little range. The local range is 200 yards but I've got access to private land much bigger. I know the VT has the better barrel for range and fxp for hunting. I'd prefer the VT's barrel to be about 20-22 inches but that can be done for about $50. Anyone have any idea the weight of each? I know the scopes on the packages aren't the best but it would do until I found my shooting was limited by the scope and had saved for a nice one.

I really wanted a 10p-sr but I can't find one locally and after shipping and FFL transfer I would have $100-150 extra in the gun with no scope. Also considered the hog Hunter but it's about $450 without a scope.

Of the two choices I'd go with the 11VT. It is always easier to lighten a barrel up than it is to make the barrel heavier.

I have the 11VT in 223. I don't know the weight, but it is a heavy beast. I plan on trying some hunting with it. I will need something to brace, or rest against while shooting. It is heavier than I would like to hand hold and wait on lining up a good shot. The only issue I have with the Bushnell scope is the eye relief is touchy at full magnification.

I am impressed with the accuracy so far. In full disclosure, I have not had a chance to go to the longer outdoor range with it yet. I have only fired it at the indoor range around the corner at 25 yds. My daughter shot it last week. Her 4th time shooting in her life. She had a 5 shot group at 25 yds that was little bigger than a single bullet hole.

My personal opinion is that you're paying $50 for a $30 scope on the package models. You'd be better off going with the hog hunter. Threaded short heavy barrel, easily as accurate as the VT, easier to carry and handle, and you have the option to leave the open sights on for backup if you want.

Another option is Cabela model 11 Prairie Dog in .223 or 22-250. Looks like a model 12 FV with a 22" barrel. $399.99 plus tax. Even lower if you do a CC application. I have the 22-250 and will replace barrel and stock soon.
