If you noticed my other 308 thread, I'm switching gears. Now I'm thinking about buying a 6BR Norma Shilen barrel and build it up on a Stevens action. Seems the mild recoil will suit me over the 308. Do the Shilen, or other barrels for that matter, require a guy to outside neck turn the 6br brass? I just want to be able to FL or neck size and be done with it. Is that possible with these barrels and caliber? Thanks again.

You can order a standard chamber ...

factory formed 6BR brass will fit the chamber with out turning.

You can form some cases out of .308 brass. when you do it that way you have to neck turn them to get them to fit. the thicker brass in the body of the .308 leaves a thick neck.

this way you can have it both ways!

So, if I got a Stainless match 6BR Norma Shilen barrel that Northland sells and factory Lapua or Norma brass, I would not have to neck turn?

match chamber or match grade barrel.

went and looked, your speaking of a select match barrel with a "6mmBR norma" chamber?

factory formed brass will fit.

I think he means the barrels are matchgrade...not the chambers. I checked into this before deciding on my Dasher build.

Good Luck...I'm sure you'll enjoy the BR...Really neat...these small efficient cases.

Thanks guys, you answered my question. Match grade barrel, not match chamber.

Greg, explain forming the 6 BR cases from 308 brass if you could... what dies would I use? I have not heard of this. Im guessing you would still use the large rifle primer of the 308? thanks, Bill

There is both small and large primer 308 cases, the large are far more common. To form the brass you would need to have a couple of case form dies, and trim the brass back. It would be same process as making 219 zipper brass out of 30/30 brass. You would come up with a 308x1.5 barnes. It is just easier to buy 6br brass.

Or 7 BR brass if you want to go cheap and have the larger flash hole (but still small rifle primer pocket).

Have only made a few, first pass was in a RCBS 7br die with no expander, then the 6br die.
