How heavy bullets can you stabilize in a 9 twist on the 22-250?

Will she do 90 gr?

Anything is possible, but I would not buy that barrel or rig banking on it, the chance are it will not, and to even begin to stabilize you would have to send them really hot.

Won't do 90. 69's should work nice. 65g SGK are also super nice!

I can do 69s in my 12 twist so you should be able to do 75-80s no problem.

Can we keep it to people that have actually shot the rig in question please or have actual experience with this twist and caliber.

As mentioned a 12 twist is good for 69 gr. Whats a 9 good for? 80 or 90?

A 1-9 will shoot 75-77 ok, but 80's and 90 will not stabilize.

I shoot a 1-9 twist Savage 22-250, it shoots the lead core 75's but not the 75 AMax. Most accurate bullet is the 53 V-Max though..
Varget
Nosler Brass
Wolf LR Primers
53 V-Max

200 yards 1/2moa or better

as you read some advice on this forum, CFE is a ball powder, it changes Point of impact with temp swings. Old tech.. like H380 only "repackaged"

Try Ramshot Big Game or 8208XBR with the 50-55 grain bullets in the 22-250.

Zero chance of 90s stabilizing, very slim chance of 80s stabilizing though 80 SMK might maybe possibly work depending on your elevation. 75 Amax probably not but maybe (I got 0.7MOA 10 shot groups in a 223 1:9 at 700' ASL and 80F temps), 75 Berger VLD should stabilize, 75 HPBT and 77 SMK/CC will but may or may not be the most accurate.

Warmer temps and higher elevations will always improve stability.

If you wanna shoot 90s you'll need a 1:7.

I shoot a 9 twist barrel in my 22-250. It is a prairie dog rig, so I shoot the 50 gr Vmaxes and buy them in the bulk 250 count boxes. Sorry I haven't shot the heavy weight bullets, but I can tell you it will shoot the 50 grs into one hole at 100 yards. I use it on bean bears out to 500 yards +/-, depending on wind.

I also load 40.0 grs of H-380. I've been using H-380 for decades. It is THE 22-250 powder imho.

So there you go, to each their own. But to me, if it 'aint broke, I don't fix it.

Berger has a stability calc. program. Do a little number crunch (fill in the blanks)

I have to agree with all the above answers. I have 3 22-250s. I rarely shoot anything over 55 grs through them. I like the velocity of the lighter bullets. Sierra 52 and 53 gr bullets are my favorites. All HBN coated.
However, one of my Savage Axis (1/9" twist) has shot the SS109 62 gr FMJs into 3 ragged holes (5 shot group) at 100 yds. It used 26.6 gr of Varget.
I have a Colt HBAR I bought new, a long time ago. I never realized just how well these ARs can shoot, until I tried heavy bullets! Of course, the HBAR has a 1/7" twist, but it rivals some of my Axis and M12s in the accuracy department. Color me surprised!

As said, you "just have to try 'em, to see what your rifle likes"

Part of the fun....

I have a 9" twist 22-250 with 26" barrel. Mine will stabilize the 75 Amax atleast until 300 yards and they shoot good, 75 gr hornady match BTHP shoot almost as good and are cheaper, but the 69gr Sierra Matchkings are a much better fit for my shorter throat and shoot superb with a stout load of IMR4350 (36.0 grains) in Lapua brass. Book max is 36.2 so if you try it back it off some to start. This is a consistent sub half MOA load for my gun, with it's occasional trip to quarter MOA when I've had enough nicotine and caffeine in me to shoot straight.
