I've never used a short cut powder before. What's the main difference between them? Volume , amount used, pressure? What's the deal

Basically what it comes down to is, you can fit more SC into a case, very convenient when you are loading up those magnums or trying to extract max efficiency or FPS.

Thanks dean. So if you hit max pressure before the load is compressed, then there's no benifit?

In my 280 ai load data shows a max charge of h4831 sc is already compressed so I'm guessing regular cut would be a large handicap

I have found when using equal amounts of both, the SC comes out on top, with lower pressure an higher FPS.

PS: yes it would be a large handicap

I have found no discernible difference between the two when loading in my 260 Ackley. But I am not compressing loads or shooting for the highest speed possible either.

Thanks a bunch guys

Technically, when you increase the surface area of a given flammable/explosive/combustible you increase the reaction efficiency and reaction speed (think about a dust explosion in a grain elevator vs lighting the actual grain). Albeit, the short cut powder has a minimal increase in surface area, and has an indistinguishable change in velocity, I like the short cut for throwing a charge before I weigh it and trickle to the final weight. The shorter grains of powder do not crunch (read break into a lot of pieces), and seem to allow for less spread in velocity.

The real advantage is the SC variety meters much more consistently through most powder throwers....H4831sc is one of my primary powders in several calibers.

...but, finding it. It's an illusive butterfly.

Tell me about it! I'm low on pretty much every powder except n160

I think I'm going to start making my own...tired of looking all over the planet when I need some.

In a 25/06 H4831SC produced a large velocity difference from H4831 with equal charge weights. The SC varity came in over 200 FPS slower with 100 grain bullets. Maybe it was because of being different lots of powder I for sure don't know.
