112 bvss 300 wm or ?

Hey guys just checking to see what other opinions were. I have a 112 300 win mag with a bvss stock and 26" barrel.. I like the rifle and shoots great , but it's just heavy. I'm trying to decide to either replace the stock with a lighter one or just build a new rifle for back country elk hunts. Opinions?

Change the stock. 180's, 208's, 210's would be SUPERB medicine for elk hunting. 300 Win Mag is a very overlooked caliber - most people believe they recoil too much. Yes...if you are running 165's or 150's.

if you lighten that 300... you might not enjoy shooting it as much. When I shoot the stevens 200 in 300 win mag - I wish it had a couple of extra pounds of stock on it. That chambering needs some ballast

I know lighter the rifle the more recoil that's why I'm deciding if a new caliber is better choice. I thought about re barreling my 243 and building it from there. The rifle does shoot 180s amazing well right now.

The elusive and no longer available 112bvss....... I would buy or build another rather than "lighten" a 112 bvss. I would also start by looking at it while I do an appropriate workout to insure a 10lb inanimate object is not allowed to kick my ass. :)

Yeah I will tell the truth I do need to workout more for backpacking. . The gun sits at 11.5 and last elk seasons I never realized how heavy 11 lbs is at 10,500 ft.

11lbs? Thats not a walkabout rifle...... It has a very noice stock though.
Me, I would screw a 308 barrel onto the 243 (Savage? straight fit) leave the BVSS or maybe screw on a 264WinMag also straight fit, no mag or bolt mods required...for when I wanted to mix it up... All good from there.

Assuming you hand load, why not rebarrel that 243 into one of the WSM's. A 6.5-WSM or even a 300WSM (since you already carry .308 caliber bullets) would be a great choice IMHO. The 6.5-WSM should be nice and flat and with the heavier bullets like 140-160gr it should knock a Elk down nicely if you do your part and you can put it together in the short action and a lighter stock that that BVSS and presto, a backpack elk rifle.

I never thought about running a 300 wsm.... Did think about running a 6.5 Cal rifle of some sort. Decisions decisions

Yeap, even 6.5 lbs gets heavy when u r climbing from 11000 to 12000 ft at 3 am in the morning. How far out r u shooting zee elk

Would like to be capable of Killing one out to 600 yds or so.

I would shoot 600 with a light weight, no problem but anymore distance than that I would need my full figured rifle.

When I think of my little long range rifle, I also think of a woman. A savage 116 24" 338 edge, small and sleek, vicious and elegant...............I call her Veara................mmmmmm

Yeah If I do choose to change out stock then I would probably like a mcmillian or manners stock.
