What it basically comes down to is, here in Mass you need a LTC even for long rifles, and It takes north of 6 months to get one, "I am still waiting" so here I have LTC in 40 of the 50 states and here I can't even buy ammo, that's right you need a LTC to even buy ammo, and yes I am stuck here for a few more years, and they will not recognize any of the permits I have, Nice

That explains it....I have an apartment in Boston (I work there) but live in Michigan (it's a heck of a commute)....I couldn't live in Massivetwo****s ;)

That barrel does remind me of the .410 leaning behind the back door!

dean you gotta get outa there and get to a free state! most of us have never even had to register a long gun by law, or need any type of permission besides being of age and not being a felon to purchase any gun or ammo (other than suppressed or full auto). Come be my neighbor and well burn some barrels out ;)

could there possibly be a loophole since the barrel isnt considered a firearm that you could screw the barrel into an action you already have the serial number registered or approved?

It is not only the gun that you register it is also yourself, believe you me I know, I gotta get out of here and my days are numbered here but, I am stuck here for now, Liberty started here and also ended here,

So researching loads and boolits for this it seems very versatile. Load levels from 45-70 cast loads to 458 win mag to nearly full house 458 Lott loads. Really I don't see a down side. Except perhaps scope life. Seriously considering the Nikon African seems to stand as good a chance of surviving as anything. Will probably start with a 40 year old weaver classic 400 4x.that road a 7mm rm its entire life. But the eye box isn't real forgiving so it will have.to get swapped out eventually.

Once you take of that 7mm it is never going back on,LOL

Good news for 50 Thumper clan, or fence sitters, yes our favorite cartridge is also available in short action, same length as a WSM or 308 so no internal box or mag change, I figure it will have about 75 to 80 % of they energy of the full load one, which is still more than you will ever need, there are also Trail Boss loads that are available, there is also a mini Thumper available in 223 length and 30-06 length in long action, all you need is 375 or 416 Ruger brass 500 S&W dies and .501" pistol bullets.

Sounds like a good idea! I was thinking the same thing :)

I'll see how the full power beast does first.

I'm thinking a Lott like compressed load of tac pushing the 500gr xtp's. At least to break it in. Then I'm planning to go paper patched cast for subs.

I use Trail Boss for subsonic loads.

PS: 500s ouch, I started with 300s, and an not sure if I want to go any heavier,

I need some specs on the short action version...I am wanting to build one on a DPMS 308 platform. The mini thumper that is .223 length should be able to be loaded a lot hotter than a beowulf due to the crappy severly rebated rim that will colapse on itself.

For the short action one, based on lets say a 308 rig internal box or detachable mag 2.800 coal, the brass would have to be 2.20" to 2.25" and that would still leave plenty of room for seating depth for the bullets, and case capacity would only be reduced from 100gr to 80gr respectively, which is still a lot by any standards.

458 soccom can be built on an AR 15 platform, 45-70 preformance and can shoot up to 600 gr bullets LOL

Here are a few examples, of what can be done with various coal's for the Thumper family, left to right 223, 308, 30-06, Rum, http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b536/jazzygirl44/unnamednnn_zps07618c9d.jpg (http://s1290.photobucket.com/user/jazzygirl44/media/unnamednnn_zps07618c9d.jpg.html)

Im going to need one Dean...Thanks for all the help. I think I want the MR BIG Thumper since you can down load it so much if I so desire.

Luke45-I have 2 50AE AR-15 that I love to play with. This .50 cal is right up my alley since I already have a stash of .501 bullets and dies that will work. Looking for/hoping to find and then finally paying top dollar for .458 socom brass isnt for me.

Dean has shot 60% loads in the big thumper, I wonder... would a filler wad between the powder and bullet help? hurt? Make no difference?

Picked up the Hornady 375 basic brass and a set of Redding carbide dies. The carbide die is taking the mouth of the brass down to about .521ish od. IIRC, problem is I can push the bullets into the case by hand with a little effort. Think I'll be trying to reduce the case mouth just a little more to get a good grip.

Also had to bore out the top threads of the Redding FL die. It was only designed to resize the 500 S&W. To size all the way to the base of the thumper I had to open up the threaded top half of the die.

Just got the barrel today. Looks pretty fricken cool!
