So now I have a question for the experts. Could the compressed load of 86gr rl7 be stable? Have seen IMR4064 reportedly behave when slightly compressed in big bore 458's ect.. that 2480 fps would still go transonic by 300 yards and likely tumbling like stone. Probably not worth chasing 100 fps.

I'll try the compressed load next week. The general consensus from the interwebs is rl7 works best compressed in big bores. (I used filler during work up). If it works like I believe it will... that should be good for 2480fps . Might even bump 2500?

I use compressed loads in mine all the time, sometimes I even use a hydraulic ram to force more in the case.

Does anyone make a plastic tip that would fit this? The 45's for muzzle loaders have em. I think that would get the bc closer to .200 and stabalize them much farther. Hmn, may have to consult the interwebs again. I kmow Cutting Edge sells their tips seperate. Don't know if they would fit an xtp though. Yet another use for super glue?

400gr Sierra JSP recovered from a oak chunk weight 388gr. Not bad by any means!http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii554/sixonetonoffun/Mobile%20Uploads/20150501_092724_zpsuqlgzi7s.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/sixonetonoffun/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150501_092724_zpsuqlgzi7s.jpg.html)

The numbers look really cool for the price. I just went with the 350's because they are always on the shelf here. The 300 looks like the ideal candidate for mag feeding if nothing else.

You could not tell by looking at it, but there is 120gr of powder in that round.

Compressed load 87gr had one stinker pulled the avg down. It's primer wasn't seated deep enough and pierced slightly not even enough for a puff of smoke.http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii554/sixonetonoffun/Mobile%20Uploads/20150505_101509_zpsucotmdbm.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/sixonetonoffun/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150505_101509_zpsucotmdbm.jpg.html)

I did run into the short trim issue mentioned above. Self inflicted rushing to beat the weather 2.61 is too short in my current setup. Good info to have am getting things narrowed down. ES 31 for the string.

Dean,
What powder are you getting 120gr to fit in there? Speed?

That is just me being full of it, I said that I was compressing loads with a hydraulic ram, Post #183, I guess no one picked up on it.LOL

The issue with erratic fps I posted back a ways... Was a full case non compressed load. The bullets just sitting on the powder crimped. Bad idea as you can see. Doesn't build enough pressure for proper ignition and results in all kinds of trouble. Creating in both high and low pressure scenarios.

All my loads used filler to create a compressed load. Except that one. Don't know wtf I was thinking.

The 87gr compressed loads I had zero issues with pressure. RL7 is the perfect case full for me with bullets under 400grs.

The best for hunting will likely be H4198 or IMR4198 for less temp sensitivity.

I think tac will work best (of what I have on hand) with the 400+ grain bullets but haven't gotten that far.

I would really like to find a Rem 798 300wm to build one of these on the cheap and have the advantage of controlled feed. Thus eliminating short cases being an issue. I can see where it would be a huge benefit when switching bullets especially.

Funny you should say that, Davidson's has that model for $297 new right now: http://www5.galleryofguns.com/genie/default.aspx?item=85864

Smoking deal but thats a 783 push feed. The 798 was a Mauser action Remington imported from Fabrique I believe and put a nicer walnut stock on.

500/375 is a cool handle. HPDT is too. But 50-90 HPDT OR 501-90 HPDT Would be a more accurate description. Glad no one suggested mm 12.7x67.31 wouldn't sound as impressive.

Still 500/375 HPDT was a good and unique moniker.
