Would the Boyds Tacticool stock be a good choice for a hunting rifle first long range gun second? The rifle is a Savage 111 in .300 Win Mag. Any suggestions or idea's would be appreciated.

Thanks

Depends on if it is going to be a carry rifle or fix position rifle. Most likely the Tacticool weights around 3 to 3.5 lbs. Long range bipod you would want the weight and stability. If a Tacticool is what you want, then get one.

A centerfire Tacticool weighs 2.85 pounds according to Boyd's. A factory accustock weighs 2.5. A tactical medalist weighs 3, a sporter medalist weighs 2.3.
Just to give you a few comparisons. I think it's doable as a hunting rifle. And it's laminate so you could probably lighten it up a little more

I was thinking about it today my mag release is on the side of my stock how would I go about taking care of the mag issue? What new parts would I need and where would I find them? Thanks for putting up with my questions I'll try and not ask the same ones twice, I should have plenty of new ones lol.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge

That is an old Savage DBM action. I don't beleive a Boyds stock is going to fit . Seee their qualifiers at the bottom of their order page. You need a newer centerfeed DBM action to make it work.

I was afraid that was the case . Guess I'll see what I can improve with the stock I have. Thanks for the info.

Any options for this action or just pick up a new rifle to fiddle with?

Someone might be able to help if you post a picture of the bottom of your action. Also measure the action hole spacing. Should be right at 5.0". You may be able to attach an old style staggerfeed blind magazine box (with lips) to the action. then you can use any Savage LA aftermarket blind magazine stock.

Do a web search for "S-T Rifle Stocks Accessories/Numrich Gun Parts". You might be able to find a discontined Savage LA stocks with the side magazine release.

If you want a DBM and more aftermarket LA stock choices (ex. Boyds Tacticool), then you will need the newer Savage LA centerfeed action.

If you are willing to go to a blind mag setup, then the tacticool can be easily fit to your action. All you have to do is just pop off the DBM body unit off of your action and pop on a blind mag body in its place.

If you need assistance on how to get the DBM body (pops off the same as a mag body) off and a mag body on this ARTICLE (http://www.savageshooters.com/content.php?269-How-To-Remove-Your-Blind-Mag-Body-and-Follower-(SF-and-CF)) may be of help. Read the section on Staggerfeed Removal/Install. Hope that helps.

Check these out, I believe this is what you need, unfortunately some are out of stock. If I were you I would put up a WTB thread in the Want to Buy board in the classifieds.

McMillan can make you a stock in any number of styles and if you want a hunting rifle I'd recommend getting the Hunter's EDGE.
22-23 ounces of synthetic splendor for a reasonable price.
You can shoot long range with a Sporter stock but a tactical (hate that nomenclature) doesn't lend itself to a quick pointing hunting rifle carried in the hands.

I have one more question center feed or stagger feed or does it matter.

All depends on what you have, my above recommendations were given for a centerfeed as that is what I assumed you had.

If the release for the mag on your DBM was on the bottom of the stock by the base of the mag then you should have a CF and if the release is a small round button in the side of the stock itself then you should have a SF.

The article I linked in my previous posting shows the blind CF and SF mags, and the DBM's will look similar as to their respective mag body style.

You can still convert to blind mag if you need to. You just need a SF Blind Mag body and Follower. Removal and Install instructions are in that article if you need them.
