For quite a while I was going down to Mobile nearly every month.

JCalhoun would take me out to eat to the latest catfish cabin he had found.

He always found good ones. Ones that served blackberry cobbler for desert.

Then he would spend the whole evening telling me about the 1,000 yard matches he was winning across the state line in Mississippi using a 6.5 x 284.

Does anyone still use the 6.5 x 284 for 1,000 yard matches ?

Has anyone ever lost a match while shooting one ?

Where do they get the blackberries?

Don't know where the blackberries came from.

But the waitresses and cooks always took good care of us when JCalhoun was there.

6.5x284 has peaked my interest, trying talk myself out of 6.5x47 instead , but now all I can think about is fried fish and berry cobbler.

The 6.5-.284 craze has been waning over that last several years. I've only chambered 1 in the last 2 years. The 6 BR seems to be taking over. The guy whose been winning matches with the 6.5-.284 is probably the same guy hoarding all the blackberries.

6BR - for 1k matches?

Not anywhere that actually has wind! ;)

Still see a number of them in sling 'Any Rifle / Any Sight' and 'Any Rifle / Iron Sight' matches... but those guys tend to haul 'em out for one string of unlimited sighters + 20 record shots in 30 minutes at the end of the day, a couple times a year. So they don't go through barrels very fast.

More and more of the F-Open crowd have moved to mid-sized 6/6.5s for mid-range matches (300-600yds), with more and more 7s and 30s showing up at long range. Interestingly... people are either going in whole hog with a 7/300WSM, 7 RSAUM, or 300WSM, or backing down a notch to a 284 Win/284 Shehane/280 Rem. I'm waiting for someone to go long with a .30-06 throated long for Berger 230 Hybrids... ;)

I played with a 6.5-284 a bit... either its fussier than I was led to believe w/ regard to load tuning, or I ran into two bum barrels in a row. Not a fan...

Monte,

I had the same experience with the 6.5-284 being fussy. Never knew from day to day what it was going to like. The .260AI will usually run whatever load I take that day with some being better than others but all are acceptable.

How much better is the AI version of the 260 over the factory version ?

It'll hold a little bit more powder. Brass doesn't need trimming nearly as often.

But trimming cases is fun and more powder can be gotten by necking down a 460 Weatherby case.

I was thinkin of using Herc Red Dot to get a little more speed out of mine ... do you think that will reduce barrel life?

That and the cobbler would be very interesting.

<----- likes cobbler....

Also just built a 6.5x284, on a 110 long action for my son who believes it's the final word on long range shooting. We'll be working up loads with the 139 Scenars and the 140 Berger VLD's using white box brass that I've had since the early 80's. Fred at SSS says he's not selling more than one or two a year, which I find kinda strange since it's only disadvantage is barrel life. I considered building one myself but when I compared the 6.5x284 to the Improved Swede in 6mm I had to go that route for the advantage it shows on paper. We were going to go head to head this weekend, but I'm STILL waiting on a stock for my rifle.

Tell you son to keep a diary. Write down all the things he feels strongly about and why he feels that way.
At some point he might not believe he wrote some of that stuff.
That dosent include good catfish or bluberry cobler of coarse. Thats always going to be a winner.

I bought the 111 LRH in 6.5x284 because of all the info available on what works. I am working on my skills right now, so I haven't started loading Berbers or SMK's yet. Just got a Viper HS LR 4-16x50 (30mm tube), but have not had a chance to take it to the range yet.

For cost savings, I am currently running Hornady 140gr BTHP Match in once fired HSM brass. Don't have my notebook handy so not sure what powder load has given the tightest group to date.

heed YOBUCKS advice ,. its as good as it gets!!!!!
YOBUCK, if you see a short lady and a pretty long haired girl(Lady) running on the beach by your place say HI
my daughter ,s name is BRANDY, the dog is an old sled dog named GIRDY my EX. brought from ALASKA .its survived wolves and a week in the bush in a trap.
My daughter will be heading down to visit family for a week or two at VERO about may 18. I will be off into the bush again tomorrow for island black bear with a 6.5x52 handloaded with 120gr. nosler ballistic tips.
its a 6.5 but nowhere near a 6.5x.284. sort of like comparing a FIAT 500 To a Corvette (Or a full size Dodge 4x4) N.N
