View Full Version : Trimmed cases are .008 short?

Ran some fired brass through the trimmer today and it came out .008 short. Trimmer has been set up for this round for some time with this never happening before- maybe it got bumped somehow etc. but that is a different thread.

Question is that I now have some cases that are .008 shorter than spec- use them or not?

Brass is always processed the same- shoulder bumped .002, neck sized, trimmed, chamfered, primer pocket cleaned and then tumbled. Weight sorting on initial batches. These were 2x fired cases, bullets used do not have a cannelure and are not crimped.

These are for a hunting rifle that has consistently shot sub MOA to 600 yards which is much farther than it will ever be used at but good practice none the less.

Is a .008 discrepancy enough of a difference to cause an accuracy issue in this application?

If you're crimping the cases it's more likely to have some effect, if you arent you are probably okay.

Thanks, sorry to not be clear but again bullets used don't have a cannelure and cases are not crimped.

I just FL sized some 1st fired 223 rem factory rounds and when I checked the length before trimming they were .008 to .010 shorter than spec. So they were at least that short from the factory ( probably .003 to .005 shorter)
If you don't mind me asking how many rds are you talking about?

I do not think it should make that much difference
I would load a few and try them

Mattri, my apologies.
I was making a generalized reference, I could have worded that better.

As long as they are all the same you should be OK they will grow as you shoot and resize them. Look on the bright side, you won't have to trim for the next few firings.

Load 'em and shoot 'em. They will get longer.

If you're really worried about it, you could FL resize them and they'd probably grow a few thousandths. But if it was up to me I'd just load em and shoot em, as stated previously, and then FL resize and you should end up close again. Close enough anyway.

As the others said, load and shoot'm. The short necks will only result in a bit more gap space, the distance from the case mouth to the start of the freebore for powder residue and carbon to collect.

Load em and shoot em... .008 isn't enough to be of concern in a hunting rifle/load.

Load 'em and shoot 'em. They will get longer.

This is the best advice.
