Fair price on new Stevens 200 combo?

I was at a LGS and ran across a new Stevens 200 with a 3-9x40 scope in 223.* They are asking $400 for it.* Is that a fair price for new?* Only thing I can find local to compare with is an Axis combo, which I understand is more cheaply made.

Is it a standard sporter-barreled Stevens, or one of the 200XP varmint barreled models?

Interwebs street price on the (now discontinued) Stevens 200 is about $350; depending on the scope mounted (probably a cheapo Simmons or Bushnell) $400 doesn't seem unreasonable.

Though I'd of course try to beat them down with cash.

When compared with the prices I have gotten around here, I think there is a lot of room there for you to bargain. On the other hand, average prices are different in different geographical areas.

I think it depends on what you want to do, where you are, and how big a hurry you're in. I picked up a used .308 WIN Stevens 200 in good shape with scope at a pawn shop for $250 a couple months ago. My plan was, and is, to keep the receiver and toss the barrel. If you're not in a big hurry, you can often find the rifles in good shape for not so much money. But, your situation may vary.

I plan on going back with a pocket full of cash and see what kind of deal I can make.

Divide up your cash into different pockets. That way, at some point, when you say, "Look, I'll give you $253, but that's all I've got." you can open your wallet, count out the $253 and the owner will see that the wallet is then completely empty.

Make sure there is a mix of bills, some fives and ones and don't simply have a round number, like $250. Have $247, or $252.

Don't tell the guy about the extra $50 in your other pocket, or the $20 in your shoe.
