emt....I have already had the talk to the wife that cash was gonna fly out the window pretty quick. However, I just landed a sweet paying job that is going to give me plenty of time to play with the toys, and she said she is tired of sittin around the house, and is going to be getting a job as well :) I already own two reloading manuals and have been reading up on them. I look forward to everything in the future, and me and my wife hunting and shooting together :)

Awesome!

I finally managed to get my wife and daughter both shooting...it took some persistance and buying them both their own weapons, but it was a worthy investment...they both enjoy going to the range with me now.

I believe that is how it will be as well. I know once I get here there, and she experiences the rush of pulling the trigger, and that bump on her shoulder, and trying to hit that center, she will be hooked !! She is VERY competitive !!! Its just a matter of getting her a rifle, and getting her out there. My daughter is too girly for shooting, but my son, I am going to buy him a rifle chambered in a 270 soon. He is a pretty big boy, and can handle the recoil. He is looking forward too shooting, and hunting with dad :)

My daughter is pretty darn girly....they make pink guns for a reason buddy! She might surprise you!

I love the 270 cal...have both a 270 Win and a 270WSM ...both get hunted with every year!

I know they make a lot of pink guns and all, but my daughter would never be able to shoot anything except a target. She is a animal lover type. I will still teach her how too shoot, because she does want to learn, but im not gonna spend a lot on a rifle if she doesnt wanna go hunting with us, lol. I have looked at all my options, and the way it is looking is this way. My self= 300wsm( which I already have), my son savage model 11 270, my wife model 11( with a pink camo stock, or a custom bulldog stock) 243, and the daughter probably a model 10 or 11 in a 223.

All excellent choices!

The 270 will be a 111 though....here's the easy way to keep the modern savage model #'s straight...the 3 digit models...111, 112, 114, 116....are long action versions (270WIN would require a long action...you could do a 270WSM though on a short action...I really love my 270 WSM and it doesn't kick any more than my 270 and it's actually lighter than my 270WIN))....the 2 digit models 11, 12, 14 and 16 are all short action rifles (243, 308, 223, 300WSM...etc...). Enjoy the hunt!

We will be going with a 270 wsm. I had a 270 mag, and it kicked like a mull !!! So i will be looking for it in a 11 model. My 270 mag was a remington 770 and it would beat me up pretty good. Straight shooter out the box, but I think it is too much out of the box for my son.

Yeah the 270 Weatherby Mags do kick like a mule...I'd look at both the 270WSM and 270WIN...they kick about the same and both are great calibers!

Walker, I am confused. You had a 270 Weatherby Magnum on a Remington 770? I am pretty sure Remmy never made a 770 chambering any of the Weatherby chamberings. The 770 was/is Remington's entry level rifle, and as such was only chambered in standard chamberings like 243 Winchester, 308 Winchester, 25-06 Remington, 30-06 Springfield, 270 Winchester, 7mm Remington Magnum, and 300 Winchester Magnum are the only chambers I recall seeing the 710/770 models being offered in.

If that is the case and you didn't have this 770 of yours built as a custom rifle in 270 Weatherby Magnum, then I am betting you have a 270 Winchester. If all that is correct and you said that your 770 was too much for your son, then a 270WSM will probably be to much as well.

Sorry...I guessed I phrased that wrong. My remmy was a standard 770 chambered in 270 win. It didnt kick so bad that I couldnt stand it, just had a decent punch to it. My son is actually my step-son, he never had a chance to shoot it. Got rid of it before I met his mother. He however is a big boy, and I have no doubt he will be able to handle the kick of the 270 wsm. He was shooting my 300wsm the other day with no problem. Sorry If I confused some people. Spoke before I knew if he could handle it. He showed me lol

Ok, awesome. Now we are on the same path.

A 270 WSM should do him fine if he handled the 300 WSM fine. I am going to suggest though that with a younger shooter you are most likely going to be going through ammo possibly rather quickly as he learns the sport. As such you may want to compare brass and/or ammo prices and availability to find what is the most economical choice in 270WSM or 270 Win.

My guess is the 270 Win will be cheaper and easier to find in the "factory ammo" category, in the brass (if you are going to handload for it) it could go either way, but I am still betting that 270 Win is cheaper and more available.

Just some food for thought.

Boots, that is a really good food for thought. I will have too do some research into that one. I'm gonna bet you are 100% right that the 270 win is gonna be easier too find. I will be reloading all these, but still willing to bet the 270 win will be more plentiful. Really looking forward too the build on the wife's 243.

Just my 2 cents worth...2 years ago I woulda agreed with Boots on the availability of 270WIN vs 270WSM components...more recently, I have found it actually easier to find 270WSM brass...if you are going to reload it's just a matter of finding brass (which is getting a little easier to find recently)...power and bullets are the same...certainly 270WIN factory ammo will be much cheaper if you are not reloading.

Cool, thanks guys for all the info. It is GREATLY appreciated. If there is any more, please shoot it my way. I'm gonna be doing the research on the 270 brass this evening. I'll let you all know what I come up with. Thanks again !!
