300 aac blk

Got a new barrel yesterday, 16.5" 8 twist 300blk. Can't decide which action to screw it on, the rifle or the striker.
Found plenty of brass premade from a vendor, need headspace tools to get started. Recoil should be mild for either frame.
Planning to have the smith turn down a thread protector to take a barrel band front sight, or may reduce the dia to a straight no taper.

Anyone shooting lighter grain bullets on theirs? What would you recommend?

I think you're going to have a hard time finding anyone else that has decided to use the .300 blackout in a Savage ( or any bolt gun) build.

Not really any reason for it in a bolt gun, it's purpose-built for the AR-15 platform.

That's odd...both my .221fb's and 20vt do just fine in a bolt action savage and cz, same size case, feed and perform well. There are several members here shooting 300blk on strikers. Several with bolt gun too.

I'm one of the board members experimenting with 300AAC on a Savage bolt rifle.. I also shoot it in an Encore, and in an AR platform. Each has its own merits for playing with it..

I tried it and it worked for a little while but I got sick of unreliable ejection and so-so accuracy. Re-chambered the 1in8 16" barrel to 308 win which resulted in 178 amax/varget 2650fps sub .5 moa supersonic and around moa subsonic using trailboss/hornady 225 bthp, most importantly: total reliability. Much happier now.
I had to try it but decided it is better served in the ar or encore (as perviously mentioned).

I have a 16" McGowen on my Axis...the ejection can be an issue.

I put mine together for a light weight hunting rifle. We cannot hunt with semi in PA, so bolt action for me.

I liked the guy that said there is no reason for it in a bolt action. Perhaps not for you, but for some people it's a viable option.

My Axis is very light and it will still be light once my TBAC is approved.

The 300 BLK should also be a viable deer cartridge for states like Indiana that have length restrictions on bottlenecked cartridges.
It also has the potential for a great youth round, not a lot of noise, even supersonic& without a can. Not a lot of recoil, pretty cheap to shoot at well when you are only using 15 grains of powder, it's effective to 200 yards, which is about the same as the kids pulling the trigger.

2650 from a 16" barrel with 178s? That sounds...warm.

I sure thought so but it is at 3200ft running 43 grains of varget in lapua brass with a 210m primer, no pressure signs whatsoever. Drops out to 800 confirmed. Could not be happier about that little fast twist barrel.

Some states, Again I think Indiana is one, where the the case length cannot be more than something like 1-3/4" & that would exclude the 308.

Sure, I am not disputing that but I expect that would that would be an exception. There is always an exception to every rule.

Indiana rules are case length no longer than 1.800" and bullet diameter .358 or larger.

You can, however, use 300 BLK all day long in a pistol...be it bolt action or an AR.

I think if I hunted, I would get the hell out of indiana, Which would be the most logical motivation behind such a law in the first place.

Indiana used to be shotgun or muzzleloader only for deer...so we're moving in the right direction.

The fact a 16" 300 BLK AR pistol is okay, but throw a stock on it and it suddenly is not, is kinda stoopid.

Curious, does anyone know the factory test results/facts with the failed 300aac caliber rifles several years ago? Wonder what twist and length barrels they tried.

May screw the barrel on a rifle action for break in because it fits the stock, and then decide if it needs to change to the striker action (if it's shooting decently). Got this to shoot at deer, my smith that hunts the farm has class III atf and makes cans to fit, does the paper work. First, it needs load testing.

About 5 years ago I altered a .221fb cz mag to slide into the bottom metal of my .20vt savage, (it was another members idea). It worked pretty well. Wonder if it could be resurected for the .3300aac? Can tell it's dead of winter here, too much time on my hands.
