My 99F

I finally got my M99F .308. If the lever boss oval number is a true indicator (R), it was made in 1964.

Metal looks great with only a few rust pits... wood, not so much. I got it torn down down, and some very bad shellac stripped off. Someone had totally buggered up the forearm and butt when they mounted snap-on sling swivels. I will have to cut and patch walnut plugs to fit in these jagged, large (3/8") holes. The cheeks are rough on the inside too, and there is a chip behind the safety tang.

Looks like this will be a rewarding project. The rifle came with a very old Japanese Tasco scope on see-through mounts which I was going to replace, but may just keep.

I got a pair just like that at Wallmart today for about the same price. But I'm not sure the purists would approve of them. I have no idea what was originally on my rifle. I just want a fairly authentic, good shooter. The stock was already buggered, so I don't feel too bad putting these on the old girl.

The pictures you have posted are of a model 99E wood, not F. The E in 99E stands for "economy" and they were usually made with less extras than the others, like the round counter and tang safety. The E would have no round counter and a lever safety. If it's just an R then it's an inspectors stamp but if you've got a partial serial number I can give you a date on it.

As for what the "original" sling studs and swivels on an F looked like is nothing, they never left the factory with them on it. If you wanted sling swivels on them after 1960 you put them on yourself on most models like the F's and E's.

No worries about purists on the rifles made after 1960, the collectors are mostly after the pre-59 rifles which were hand checkered and built much stronger. After 1960 they started to use stamped parts and functionality started downhill. Although a few calibers like 375 Win, 22-250 and 7mm-08 still bring the big bucks in the 99's made after 1960 due to the rarity of them.

I don't know if the wood is original or not but the barrel has 99F on it and there is a round counter and tang safety. My pics don't really show them I guess.

The gouges were so deep on the forearm from the poorly installed sling swivel that, even with plugging and filling, that I have had to go deeper and will make the fore arm "schnabel-esque". I was able to plug the butt stock swivel hole with not too much trouble, but still had to go deep to get rid of the gouges. Ahhh Bubba....

Will post pics as I add to the refurbish.

Yeah, maybe. It was pretty well butchered inside. But this makes me feel even better about doing some changing. I may have to make the butt stock into kind of a perch belly to get past the gouge.

So you're gonna drill holes and put those sling studs on that minty, virgin beauty? Not judging mind you, just curious.

Just in the buttstock the other screw replaces the forearm screw...im not a collector by any means its all about comfort to me. All the walking I do in the woods I need a sling.

I obviously no little about these rifles, but the inletting for the sight boss looks machine carved and the stamp on the end of the butt and the stamp on the bottom of the receiver both say LB 7.
