How many of y'all are using Dillon presses for loading rifle ammunition ?

I have a 550 set up for .38/.357 - never set it up for rifle stuff.

My 550 is currently set up for 6.8. When I'm done loading them, I've got about 1500 rounds of 223 to do. If I'm doing more than 100 rounds, I'll use the Dillon, from 223 all the way up to 300 WinMag. I've never used it for pistol rounds.

I've got one of their 20mm rotary cannons for prairie dogs. Does that count?

I bought one of their first made non-commercial presses in 1981. It's a 450 and it was made in the first 6 months of their production in that model. I've loaded everything from 22 Hornet to 338 Win Mag on that press. I also loaded around 50K rounds of competition grade 30-06 ammo with it for my old match grade M-1 Garand back when I shot service rifle competition.

It's never broken a single part, and I'm still using it. Heck it even still has the original springs in it.

Yeah, I'm a believer in Dillon equipment.

I load almost everything I reload in my Dillon 550 (223, 260 Rem, 9mm). It does a good enough job for me. I recently helped a friend develop a load for his new rifle on it. We found a load that shoot 2" groups at 600 yds. (260 Rem)

Some folks talk about the floating tool heads causing a bunch of run out. I don't know about that, I never measured. Don't think I'm going to, either.

I use 550B for 22 K hornet, 20 Vartarg, 20 tactical, 204 Ruger, 222 Rem, 22-250, 6 PPC, 6 BR, 308. I dont use the powder measure, but weigh the powder charge.

I'm loading .223,.243,.308,9mm,.45,.41mag on my 550b and love it. Powder drop has been consistent and have no complaints!

I'm thinking I got to get me one. I'm a firm believer in a thrown charge!

what kind of powder are you guys running?

Also, I have like 7.3 ft ceiling height in my office, what kind of foot print does 550b have?

My apologies for the hijack!

I have my 550 on the riser attachment they make. with the whole thing sitting on top of my 33" hi workbench. The top of the primer stuff is at a couple inches over 6 feet when full of primers. I think you got plenty of room.

I have a 650 and load pistol and rifle ctgs with it. Great unit, and Dillon service is the BEST!

Need to know the height of the primer follower rod when it is at its maximum height with a full tube of primers with more room to pull it out without needing to bend anything.

Off topic, kinda.....
I might have mentioned that the only thing I don't love about my 650 is the priming....
I would much rather seat my primers by hand with my el-cheapo 30 year old Lee hand primer. I usually just prime while watching tv, whatever. I have never used the priming arm on any of my single stage press, either. Just not enough 'feel' for loose pockets.
Loading primed cases into the 650 has absolutely no impact on output speed. Although, being retired, I'm never in that much of a hurry.

I don't have the additional height of the strong mount.

I hope this helps.

I have had a couple 550's and love them.I only wish I could upgrade to the 650 as it is more robust and auto index's.I have loaded rifle and pistol and I cant load fast enough. It is real accurate as well.If you are shooting benchrest, well thats a different story.

Like Slim, I've got a 30 year old 450B. I use it for everything from 9mm to 41 mag in pistol and from 20 Vartarg to 7mm Rem Mag in rifles. Admittedly, a lot of the time I don't use it as a "progressive," because I deprime, remove the cases for polish, prime, remove cases to weigh each charge, then seat, but at least when I set up for one caliber, I can shoot, come back and re-load in short order without changing dies. I've had a few minor issues over the years, but even when it was my own dumb fault, Dillon wouldn't even accept payment for anything I've ever fixed - so I bought the maintenance kit so I could replace little things like springs and seating punches if I ruined one through my own carelessness. They are a class outfit that make a good product.

I will have to wait till I get a space with higher ceilings :-(, not happening in the current space.

This thread helps trying to get my shop back running and was wondering about the heigth. However, is there a member willing to talk by phone to help me choose the right tooling for three rifle calibers. I've been through the directions on Brian Eno's site and still need help making an order.

Load for three rifle calibers but would like to be able to load several more in the future. Also, have RCBS 2 die sets. I think I need the three turrent head sets, don't know about seperate primer tubes and powder throwers. I will measure ceiling today but it is on old slant roof shed and there's not much room. Please pm if you might help.
