I just picked up a Stevens 200 in 22-250. I really want to shoot Berger 80 or 90 grainers. My question is what twist do I need to shoot the 90s with.... Will a 1/8 get it done or will I need a 1/7? And I really dont want to go with a heavy barrel contour barrel. Im thinking heavy sporter at most, in the 24 inch range, with a shortened length of pull Boyds stock. One last question.... should i
I go with the Ackley Improved version??

Thanks

Ryan

Friend of mine ordered a 1-8 Shilen in a lighter contour. It shot great with the 80gr Sierras but barrel life began to go north after about 1200 rounds.

Elevation will help you IMMENSELY, but 90s in a 1:7 will still be a bit iffy.

At sea level, 59F, 0% RH, 29.92" Hg a 90gr Berger VLD @ 2900fps (probably achievable from a 24" 22-250) has a stability factor of 1.01

At 5500' ASL with environmentals the same, stability goes up to 1.26.

Drop temp to 0F, and you're back to 1.12.

Anything below 1.4 is considered marginal, anything below 1.00 is unstable.

I've had great accuracy with a stability factor of 1.02 (75gr A-Max in a 1:9 barrel) so YMMV...

Thanks guys... looks like the 90s will be out for what I am trying to accomplish. I want a shorter and lighter contour barrel for calling dogs. I know that the heavy bullet is overkill but I just love em.... There is nothing wrong with the 80 grain or the 75 for that matter. That is the way it looks like I may have to go.

I'm running the 80 grain out of a 8" twist 26" long barrel and it is very very nice!

Missed, is yours a varmint contour?

WBM..... 1200 rounds is really quite a few for a hunting rifle..... Do you think that the contour had something to do with it degrading sooner than he expected?

Again thanks guys.... I really want one of these....

No a heavily fluted bull that weighs what a varmint does.

My 1-9" twist 26" barrel loves the 75 grain Amax but unfortunately it has a short throat for that long of a bullet and I have more of the bullet behind the neck than is desirable. Also finding those bullets right now is near impossible. The 75 gr. match BTHP shoot almost as good and are available but still have the same problem. These are pushed 3200 FPS at 2300 elevation FWIW.

I've found the 69 Sierra MatchKings to be absolute tack drivers for me and work very nice for the length of my throat. It is a consistent sub half MOA gun in good conditions. The other week in heavy changing winds they were printing .6 MOA at 300 yards, and I'm not a prone shooter by any means!

Maztech,

Thanks for the info. You have a great point about them not being available. There is nothing wrong with the 70 grain bullet! I really think that Im going to do this. Still want a 24 inch heavy sporter with a 1/7 twist. Having the ability to shoot the heavy bullets will be cool. .6 at 300 is awesome! I dont really want to go Ackely improved only because I dont want to buy another set of dies.
