What is the best cartridge/bullet/angle combination for splitting green firewood ?

Taking into account both economic and recoil costs, would a couple of FMJ from a 308 Win into the end of the of the firewood stick be best ?

Or would a single shot of 500-grain solid from a 460 Weatherby be better ?

Or maybe bonded-core partitions for a wedge effect ?

Would a stick end with the wood grain shot be best or a side shot across the grain ?

splitting wood and especially green wood wont go well by shooting at it.
certainly shooting at the end of a piece would be best but dont be expecting good results.
we have been known to "prune" branches that get in the way of our glassing and shooting.
those shot off appear to have been caused by natural events. those cut with say a chainsaw
appear to have been cut with a chain saw which might be frowned upon.
a 6" diameter limb on an oak tree will take an unbelievable ammount of military a. p.s from an 06 to bring it down.
ace the bullet idea and buy a wood splitter.

I don't like axes, wedges, or splitters. I like to watch my kids use those.

I shot a hung up tree down with slugs and buck couple weeks ago. Best way to split, shoot in a good fat hole in the end. Pack with black powder, fuse, pound a stick in and light it. :)

I guess that would depend on how long the tie is. Full length - definitely not. Cut to length to fit in most wood burning stoves - I'd say probably yes.

Back in the late 1980's my great aunt's brother left an 8mm Mauser to my dad that he had somehow managed to ship back to the U.S. during WWII as a souvenir. Dad had made a backstop at the back of the property that consisted of two rows of stacked railroad ties, and maybe 10-15 yards behind that was the old burn pile that formed a nice tall berm.

Dad shot approximately three rounds out of that Mauser - immediately after which he saw that all three rounds had blown right through both rows of the railroad ties. Was one of the few times I can actually remember my dad being truly shocked or surprised by something. Not needing or wanting anything that big/powerful he sold it a few days later.
