I guess that would depend on how long the tie is. Full length - definitely not. Cut to length to fit in most wood burning stoves - I'd say probably yes.

Back in the late 1980's my great aunt's brother left an 8mm Mauser to my dad that he had somehow managed to ship back to the U.S. during WWII as a souvenir. Dad had made a backstop at the back of the property that consisted of two rows of stacked railroad ties, and maybe 10-15 yards behind that was the old burn pile that formed a nice tall berm.

Dad shot approximately three rounds out of that Mauser - immediately after which he saw that all three rounds had blown right through both rows of the railroad ties. Was one of the few times I can actually remember my dad being truly shocked or surprised by something. Not needing or wanting anything that big/powerful he sold it a few days later.

I love Mausers. I still shot a M39 Sako built 1944 Finn but it kicks worse than when the maul bounces back!
