OK, I have searched and found a few mentions of a "modification" that can be done with the 110 Staggered feed blind magazine that will net a COAL capacity of 3.90". Problem is, I have NOT been able to find any detailed explanation or photos that explain exactly what needs to be done to make this longer cartridge COAL fit. Can anyone here point me in the right direction or share their personal experience in doing this mod. I appreciate any help you can offer.
Thanks
John

I sectioned two mag boxes then welded the pieces back together, did it once and it's not worth effort to do it again. Much easier to slot the front of a center feed box, less work to get it to function properly also.

So when you say "slot" the front of a center feed mag, are you saying I would need to remove the staggered feed mag, then cut the front of a center feed mag box, and then switch to a center feed stock? Or can this be done with my existing staggered feed stock? Also, can I just order a center feed mag box and follower from Savage for this project?

Again, thanks for your input. I really appreciate it.

The receivers are machined differently for the stagger feed vs. center feed magazines.

What caliber are you currently chambered for?

Remover the stagger feed box then slot the front of a center feed mag to allow the tip of the bullets to protrude. You can use your existing stock, it will need some work but so would the center feed. You can order the mag box/follower from Savage. You'll need to lengthen the mag inlet and trim the front baffle to increase bolt throw. I just bed/glue the mag box into the stock to hold it in position.

It doesn't matter as you have modify it anyway.

Be very careful modifying the action. You only want to take a very minimal amount from the front of the mag opening. Just enough to clear the tip of the bullet. You don't want to weaken the lower lug abutment.

Most where you gain is to the rear of the mag opening, bring it flush to the nose of the bolt.

I've done this and also don't feel it is worth the effort either.

Okay, THANK YOU!!! That makes it much more easy to understand. I have a 7mm RM 110 staggered feed and want to be able to load the 168 and 180 grain VLD's as a repeater. So, that is the actual goal. Sounds like I would be better off leaving the loading ramp in tact and just removing the material at the rear of the magazine opening. Since I am going to "glue" the new center feed mag in anyway, couldn't I just move it back to match up with the bolt face/new enlarged magazine opening? I'm going to call Savage today and order the mag and follower. Thanks again for all of your help I really appreciate you sharing.

Called Savage and should have a center feed mag box, follower and retainer on the way. I will try to remember to take pictures and document this process so that anyone else that might be interested can see how the conversion is done.
Stay tuned.....

That's what I've done on the stagger feed actions.

Mr.Nasty, Yes please take pics. and document it as completely as possible. I'm in the process of building a 7mm Practical or maybe a 7mm Valkerye on a Savage 116 ,7mmrem.mag action. At this time it looks like the mag is going to be my biggest problem. I want the mag as long as possible . Both of these ctgs. are 7mm/300wm case and I'd like to load 180+ gr.bullets without eating alot of case capacity. Any help/advice will be appreciated. Paul

I know you have a sf - but its much easier to do on CF action
I have done both -
cf buy bending tab on rear of mag slightly slotting front of mag -
welding a small piece of shaped banding steel on it & relieving stock
sf by milling rear of action to mimic a cf then using a cf mag as above-
shimmed to stay in place in stock -
it worked flawlessly -but I'd never do that again
I'd just trade it in on a CF -or use it in a non magnum cartridge where longer coal is not needed
& just buy a cf

directed at Op Nocturnalnasty question
but it is a public post ...
this area in sf has to be removed for longer coal in mag calibers
a cf side by side for machinist -to duplicate & for comparison
