So I was thinking of building a wsm. But I have a couple questions. First, can you build one on a small shank action and it still be safe? Second it would be used for elk, deer, speed goats, and maybe a black bear so what would be better a 7WSM or a 300 WSM? They both seem to be great rounds but I just can't decide one over the other.

Between the two, the 7WSM would get the nod from me for everything except black bear, that I would opt for the 300 WSM.

I have had a couple of 300 wsm barrels and really like the round. Seemed like when compared to other wsm the 300 had the best velocity, but I only have another 243 wssm and no experience with other wsm.

I would say 6 of 1 and half-dozen of the other.

The 300-WSM is by far the most popular WSM and as such components will be more likely to be produced more regularly in these times of component shortages.

Thanks guys if I decide to build one it will be the 300wsm now my other question is can one be built safely on a small shank action?

Sure can. I had a 300WSM on a small shank for a bit and I am currently running a WSM based wildcat (the 6mm-WSM, necked down 270WSM) on a small shank and both worked perfectly.

Quite a few guys on here run WSM's on small shanks and I have yet to hear any complaints or issues.
