Hi folks im shooting a savage 12 f/tr in 308 calibre out to 1000 yards using the new sierra palma bullet over varget powder, the rifle is shooting really well but im thinking about the day the barrel starts to turn downhill and what is the best option for a barrel change. I would wish to continue with the 155 grain bullet and would like to hear your opinions or experiences with aftermarket barrels for savage 12 f/trs..thanks.

From what I've heard the 308's will last a lifetime. If it shoots well, you might replace it only for a different caliber or cartridge.

I have a Shilen Select Match 1:13 ratchet twist with the Palma (95 i think) chamber. It shoots lights out with the Berger 155.5 and Sierra Palma. Call Shilen, they should be able to set you up.

I recently rebarreled an old Model 12 with a 30″ – Stainless Select Match – Small Shank – Bull – 308 Win – 10 Twist drop-in barrel – from Northland.

It is NOT slender, but it shoots bughole groups with Berger 155s over Varget. It (so far) shoots about as well as my Savage Palma gun.

The 10-twist will also enable you to shoot longer bullets if you like. I have only tested with 155s since that's what I mostly run through my Palma gun.

I have not found any better value proposition anywhere yet.

Northland also usually has large shank barrels.

Good luck.
