Does Savage do special requests? I'm thinking about a Model 12 Benchrest in a 6.5 Creedmoor. I know they build the 6.5x284, and I know they have 6.5mm barrels in house. Why not offer the 6.5CM as a 600-yard benchrest gun. the Creedmoor should be easier on the bore and the B.C. of the 6.5mm bullets are much higher than that of the 6mm. I'd most likely use it on 600-yard and 1000-yard shooting (F-Class or F/TR). Any thoughts?

Well to start, the gun is called the model 12 "Long range Benchrest," it is called that because of its design, and intended purpose is for long range Benchrest. With that said they looked at what is popular in Benchrest and built the rifle around that. (except for the 308 chambering, don't know why they offer it in this gun.) You will be hard pressed to find anyone shooting 600 or 1000 yard bechrest shooting a 6.5 caliber, especially the 6.5 Creedmoor. Savage does offer the chambering in the model 12 long range precision rifle, so with that said you could order the gun your asking about through the custom shop. You may want to look at some bullet BC charts, you may find that the 6mm have just as good, if not better BC than any of the 6.5 mm. Remember to compare apples to apples, look at like weights. As far as barrel life, that is more dependent on the amount of powder used than the caliber. 6mm BRs have a long life.

I did a quick survey looking at last years IBS 600 and 1000 yd matches and came up with the following:
@600 yds.....6mm's rule. 6BR, 6 Dasher, 6 BRX and 6x47 Lapua.
@ 1000 yds......It is split with 70% 6mm, 25% 6.5, and the remainder 30 cal.
The 6.5's were split between 6.5 x 47 Lapua, and the 6.5-.284.
I could not find any match report or equipment list that mentioned a 6.5 Creedmoor.

Bucksnort, i shot a 6.5 cm at williamsport in 2012 and shot the smallest group of my year 7.5" 95 score. i shoot the 140 a-max at 2860 fps.using a mcgowen 28" brl. in 2013 i built a 300wsm just for the heavy tips bucking the wind. when its not windy i still bring out the cm. some guys shoot factory ammo and just throw the empty cases away. i think just because no big brass co. makes brass till this year, norma, i made my own brass out of 308 brass rem. brand. love the cm.....MARK25-06

I own a Model 12LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor and it is a tack driver. You need to check out the 6.5 Creedmoor forums and any question you have about the round can be answered there. You can also read stories from the members who have been dominating their competetion. Just my 2 cents worth.
