I'm new to hunting and I have a .308. The scope that came with my gun is not good at all. What should I get with out going broke. I'm in Cali. And hunt D8 and D9. For deer, pig, and bear.

You should be able to find a used Leupold VX-II 3-9 or Sightron Big Sky 3-9 for about $200-$250. I've had both and they have good glass and hold zero.

What kind of distance are you going to be hunting?

A higher quality, lower power optic will be brighter and more clear than a lower quality, higher power optic.

For the distances we usually hunt in S. MS (under 150yd, usually MUCH closer) I like a 2-7x or 3-9x at the absolute highest power. My scopes stay on the low setting 90% of the time. Makes finding your target easier with the wider field of view.

I put leupold scope rings on the scope I have now but can't seem to find one at that price yet.
