My neighbor was owed $500.00 and took a Stevens .243 with Nikon 3-9 BDC scope in lieu of cash. Went to the range yesterday to sight in. Ted is NOT a shooter at all so I was really impressed with 1" groups @ 100yds and factory ammo. Needless to say I am impressed with the rifle.

Did he get a good deal?? Not sure, but he is happy and now has his first rifle.

Unless that was a $200 yes he got ripped off. You can pick up a new stevens for $250-300 if you know where to look. And all stevens shoot at or under 1" from the factory. He does however have a nice rifle.

Good luck,

I think he did ok, not great but ok.
Last one i bought was
Stevens 200 $321.00 out the door
Same scope as his $150.00 plus tax
rings & bases $30-$50
This was all local, so I think he did ok

As mentioned a Stevens can be purchased for around $300 new. Depending on what scope the Nikon is could change the value a bit. My guess is the scope is a Buckmaster, and the BDC reticle in black sells new for $219. These are new price not used. I would say he was on the loosing side of things.

I guess the main thing is that if he is happy who cares.

If he didn't think he was going to get all his cash he did ok. He didn't get a 700 dollar gun for a discount, but he did get a gun and scope if bought new, would be more than 500$ out the door at a locale gun store.

So don't let him feel to bad he has a gun that will last a long time and will shhot 1" groups.

agreed..he may only be off by $50-75 though, so it aint that bad. And also if the guy owed him money and he was having trouble getting it, then he probably did the right thing and took whatever he could get from the guy. And hey, it shoots good and is easy to customize, so it isnt like he got a pc of crap as payment. I woulda probably done the same thing.

At times it's better to have something , rather then nothing at all...
