are they junk?
I know of three rifles bought at Walmart in 308 win that
would not shoot better than a 3 inch group.

No, not junk, same rifles you'd buy anywhere.

What kind of rifle did you buy, and what kind of ammo did you feed it? You may have gotten a lemon, and there might have been other things at play.

I prefer them as they are still selling models with the side bolt release, at least around here. I hate their new bottom bolt release models.

I bought a savage in 308 at Walmart a few years back and while I was there got a couple boxes of federal shells. Long story short same idea the gun shot huge groups. I went to a local gun shop and they hand loaded some shells for me and the problem was solved. The gun simply did not like those federals at all. With the hand loads it was a tack driver. I later found out that Remington core locks shots pretty well to for a factory cartridge. So might be worth trying some different loads if you haven't. I hope that helps.

Never had a savage or savage barrel that would not shoot under one inch. Probably ammo, scope, scope mount, or shooter issues.

One problem that is common with the 308 is trying to get good groups with surplus 147gr ammo, it wasn't made for target type shooting and few stock 308's will get tight groups with it. After the rifle is correctly broken in try some quality different brand(s) ammo and see what happens.

I know of two (Axis .223 and .270) that will shoot MOA with any ammo I have thus far tried in them (at least six different loads in each one, consisting of various factory and two handloads in each).
