Then the only thing I can figure is I put a LA bolt head in there, that won't work!

Can you disasseble the bolt and see if the distance between the bolt head retaining pin hole looks like a SA or a LA? I don't know the spec for either, maybe some one has it. . .

Does anyone know of another distinction, or configuration I am missing?

Looks to me like you have the correct bolthead and baffle(according to that link above), and just do not have the longer firing pin that is needed.

This was probably just a standard short action that was swapped over to a wsm action, which is why it is also small shank.

Here is Fred's post on the bolt heads in the FAQs.

Yup, that action started as a 243, then went to 223, and then over to WSM, but was never fired. Seems like it was just a short firing pin!

Fred makes a longer firing pin stop for short heads in a long action.
Ask him if he makes a shorter one. I think there is enough room but never needed to find out.

You'll definately need the longer firing pin, there is not enough adjustment range in the standard pin to get enough length even with a shorter nut.

I just ordered a new bolthead from SSS for 308 family, but I have to call Lisa back to possibly order some more parts.

I wondered why I thought it might be possible to adjust the firing pin stop back enough to work. I had a mental picture of a wsm firing pin assembly and just had to check it. Here is a pic of a SA firing pin on the left compared to a WSM CRF firing pin on the right. Its hard to tell but the wsm pin is longer from the fps to the tip by about .055"
