Im trying to switch my 300 win to a 308 and I am in the middle of Switching the bolt face. the ejector and extractor fit perfect. When I went to assemble I cant get the holes to line up. When I inspect the old bolt I notice a small cut out and also that it is a little bit longer. Did I get the wrong bolt or is there something I need to do?

Two things going on here. That notch in your old bolt head fits over a tab in the bolt body to index the bolt head. The tab can b e ground down with a dremel. The second thing is that your new bolt head is for a short action, and what you need is a 30-06 or .473 bolt head for a long action.

Well it all makes sense now! I feel pretty dumb for thinking the 308 bolt head would work for the long action, but I never read it anywhere that it wouldn't. Thank you very much for the help, I just ordered the 30-06 bolt head. Im a little bummed because I will have to stare at this new barrel for a few more days. Thanks again.

Things such as this have happened to us all a time or two, and we learn from them and move forward. While you are waiting on your new bolt head, I would take some time and read through the Savage FAQ section (not to be confused with the forum FAQ section on the how to's of navigating the forum itself) and the Articles Section and just read through everything. Lots of great information in there that will make your next build, or the rest of this one, much easier. Most of the Articles are written by Moderators and other Members who have been there and done that and were willing to share.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

+ on all of the above and don't discard the small rifle head (.308) as it can work in a long action just the same with a firing pin change and/or adjustment.....If it doesn't then my LA .221 fireball must have not got that info....
Good Luck,
