I have a 12fv in 22-250. I am getting .5" at 100, and 1" at 100 yards. I am thinking about a new barrel in the same twist and caliber. Would you swap barrels?

half inch at 100 yards,what a piece of junk.Take it off and send it to me for disposal.All kidding aside there is nothing wrong with a barrel that will shoot like that,you would be taking a chance that the next barrel would that good.I would not get rid of it until it went downhill more and could not be saved.Just my opinion.

I'd expect better than 1", but, as pdog said, .5" is good at 100.

I am downsizing the savage line and going with one varmint gun. I've stocked it and bedded. Nice Harris swivel with stops bipod. The trigger breaks nice at 3#. Its scoped fairly nice with a Bushnell 4200 MD scope and I am looking to upgrade something on this rig.

The barrel would be 'free' and probably be Shilen

It depends on your skill level, a factory gun that shoots 1/2 moa is great. Could it get better with an aftermarket barrel, it is possible. If I was going to get a new barrel, I think I would look for something different. Me personally would look at replacing it with a 22/250AI in 1 in 9 or 8 twist. I like shooting heavy high BC bullets long range. (600 to 1000 yards) You might not like what I do. If you happy with it, keep shooting it, but eventually it will burn out. You may also like to try a 22BR, or a 22PPC , both are very interesting calibers.

If I was itching to upgrade something, I'd go with an aftermarket trigger before replacing a good shootin barrel in the same caliber.

I want to stick with the 22-250, it fits the void in the calibers I already have. Ive messed with a 1:9 223, great caliber just not what i am looking for

I've thought about a 1:8/9 for the 22-250, but in western PA your going to top out at the 500-600 yard mark for groundhog hunting. Any fields over that I am going to a 25 caliber+ gun.

I wouldn't touch a barrel on a gun that consistently shot .5 MOA.

Its reversible, right ? If you have access to a Shilen, try it out. If for whatever reason you prefer your original barrel, put it back on. Its not a Remington....

The 308 I built with a Shilen got me my first ever 1/4" group. Its pretty exciting to shoot a group half the size of any you have ever shot before. Particularly when shooting a 175gr bullet...

not sure how much shooting you do but keep in mind 22-250 barrels burn out quick. its a very hot round, I would shoot the one you have till she burns out and switch down the road. or maybe buy the shilen and switch back after it burns out, either way just keep it in mind if you do much PD hunting. I was bummed when mine burnt out. I've looked at moving to a wildcat to get the barrel life and velocity I want out of a small caliber rifle.

but for now I'm going to stick with my 6.5 and try some 95 gr vmax out of it.

Shooting .5 MOA is one thing....Hitting 1MOA targets with the first shot is something else?? Might be worth finding out?

The accuracy improvement you seek is most likely hiding in the load.

6mmbr is DEADLY out to 600 with factory loaded ammo.

Need more information first. Are you just shooting factory ammo, or are you handloading? Either way, how many combinations of loads have you tried? Some barrels will be very picky on loads and some will not. A high velocity cartridge like 22-250 in a factory barrel tends to be picky in my experience. As in it may show a very strong preference for one load and not shoot another similar load worth beans.

What does your factory bore look like? How many shots do you get in a row before your groups open up due to fouling? How hard is your factory barrel to clean?
