Can you guys please explained these terms to me? I thought I understood, but am getting some conflicting info when I use google. My purpose is to determine which EGW rail to purchase for my Axis .308.

The Axis is a long action, but has an adjustable baffle on it. The difference is the stock and magazine being for a long action or a short action cartridge. The 308 is short action. I'm pretty sure the only long action cartridge the Axis comes in is 30-06.

I think with EGW rails they have one that fits the AXIS you just need to select 0 or 20 MOA

Well gee golly, I sure do appreciate your words of wisdom. The information you provided is not only useful, but incredibly insightful. Being new to this sight, I aspire to be just like you and patronize incoming members with a needless, condescending attitude and offer absolutely 0 useful information. Get a clue dude, obviously I didn't know since I asked a question.

Thanks to those that helped out, you answered my question.

The Axis action is only manufactured in one length.

In the case of the Axis, there are different bolt baffles, magazines, and trigger guards that are used depending on whether it is chambered for a short action cartridge or long action cartridge.

Short action cartridges are cartridges similar in length as a .308 Winchester or the other cartridges that have evolved from it: .243, 7mm-08, 260, 338 Federal, 358 Winchester, for example. Even shorter cartridges such as .223 or 7.62x39 are also considered short action cartridges.

Long action cartridges include the 30-06 and all the cartridges derived from it, as well as a others of similar length. The venerable 458 Winchester Magnum is also designed to be chambered in a standard long-action rifle.

For what it's worth, many short action cartridges are shot out of long action rifles that are chambered for that particular cartridge.

Since the overall receiver/action of the Axis is the same length regardless of the chambering, any rail designed for an Axis will fit all Axis rifles. EGW makes one and it is available from about 32.00 to 40.00 depending upon where you purchase it.
