Heres one for all you BIG caliber guys! A 458winmag Safari Express model 116. Pretty serious rig. Hammer probably already has 1(or 10) to tame those hard charging prarie dogs :D

Didnt wanna put it in the classified "deals around the web" section cause it is an auction list, and not so sure if it is a good deal or not. Just figured I'd post it cause it is not a Savage that you see everyday.

Nice gun though I doubt the break will have any affect with that cart. I have a Ruger M77 in .458 Mag. It's a beast.

Cast lead.........It can be loaded with black powder also....and duplicate the old 45/90.

I have one just for that purpose. ;) ;D

That sounds like an excellent idea. - It would make a fine deer rifle. I have always been partial to the 45-70 but often wished I had a good bolt gun that would throw a big chunk of lead at about the same velocity.

In hindsight, I feel dunderheaded for not thinking of a .458 Winchester bolt gun many years ago... They are slightly heavier in the barrel and are set up to tame recoil. The open sights are about right, but I imagine I would have a Williams peep sight mounted on it before long. A big can of IMR SR4759 would fix me right up for deer hunting.

The comments and conversation around the campfire would be fun, too.

The 405 cast bullets were original bullets in the 45-70. I love my 45-70, and can certainly attest to its power. Look Linebaugh tests.

Have some 458 Win Mags.

But have played more with the 458 Lott, 460 Weatherby, 470 Capstick, 475 A&M, 500 Nitro Express, 500 A-Square, 550 Mag, 585 Nyati, etc.

The 458 Win Mag is just a little underpowered for most applications.

You really need to be able to drive a 750-grain blunt solid at about 2400 fps to make an impressive impact and get the proper attention.

500 grainers were the original 45-70 bullets - the 405 grain bullets were a carbine load for the calvalry boys (and more popular because they didn't kick as hard).

The issue with cast bullets in the 458 is the really fast twist of most factory 458 tubes - not really great for low velocity cast bullet accuracy.

I'm sure the 750grainer would give some attention. Is it actually bigger than the prarie dog you would be shooting with it ???

I used the 405 gr cast from a Lee mould in a Rolling Block 45-70 clone from Navy Arms and they were very accurate. At least with the rate of twist in that rifle, may be differnt in yours. I loaded them with Pyrodex most of the time which was the equivelant of 55 gr of 3F black powder. The original 45-70 BP load was compressed and without a rig to compress it you can only get 55 gr of Bp in the case and still seat the bullet. No such problems with modern powders. It wa a long time ago and I forget what modern powders I used.
