Hodgdon list 45.0 of varget as max and a compressed load. for 175s
Sierra says 36.3 min and 41.7 max for 175/180 gr bullets.

big difference. don't take this as gospel, just my opinion.
I think Sierra likes to find sweet spots on the low side. and Hodgden likes to run hot!
Never have I had my most accurate load at max.

Great advice -- I only shoot the 168 smk's but have had the same experience with accuracy concerning the Sierra and Hodgdon data differences. I at first wanted to push speed, but then thought, especially for targets only, why would I be that much harder on my equipment (brass, barrel) for no accuracy gain? Doesn't mean you have to shoot a load that is overly weak, but I have had very good success in the 308 using Sierra's recommended loads or those a bit below their listed max.

2.8" is standard book load. Unless you have a VERY strange FP, they ALL have throats like... well, very long throats.
175 SMK's touch at 2.920" in my 10FP I load them at 2.897"
I Interchange RP/Frontier brass; My LC Match brass likes about 1 grain less.
CCI BR-2 Primers
I didn't like Varget, for this app. it heats my barrel too quickly, and throws flyers.
I ended-up using Win 748. 43.5 Grains Chronos at and average(6 shot string) of 2653 Fps 9 Fps SD
At 50 degrees and overcast(30" HG)
This load gives me a 500 yard group of 2.66" on center.

PS - Don't forget to get a lee factor crimper, and use it!!
