I recently acquired this old rifle. No nothing about it except the previous owner said its from the early 1900's. It states Savage high pressure steel? It also has some patents listed: 1893 and 1909. Serial is 173490. It looks very old. Has a flip up rear peep sight.
i am not well versed on older rifles. Can anybody enlighten me. We're there a lot made ? Is there still ammo for this? Is it worth much? Also the barrel just screws off. The action works and it has that nice old brown/ purple pettina on the action and barrel. No pics yet

There's 250-3000 ammo still around, but it's not all that common anymore. If you want to shoot it much, learn to handload.

Without a pic, I assume it's the lever-action Model 99. If the barrel comes off like that, it's the much-deprecated "takedown" model, which was not known for accuracy. (Many were "hardened up" by salting the joint until it rusted tight.)

If it's not rusted, and is unmodifed, it's probably worth quite a bit to collectors. Serial # puts it between the wars, I think. Mad Dog will know.

Thanks. Its not rusted. Thee only real rust was on the butt plate. I wiped it down with oil and used a nylon brush on the butt plate with some oil to slow down the rust. Yes its a lever action.

First off, it's not an 1895, it's whats called an 1899 250-3000, some call them "deluxe" but they aren't, just another model.

Yours will fall right inbetween 2 different variations but I'd hazard a guess it's closer to the first variation and has a cross checkered trigger, the second variation will have a trigger with vertical lines cut into it.

Collectors will go anywhere from $500 to $2000 but it doesn't sound like your gun is a 99% rifle so I'd chance it your in the $500 to $800 area.
