Hi guys,

just trying to find a load for the 75gr amax.

I see that the 75 needs a fast twist barrel but also that it explodes when pushed fast in a 22-250.

Has anyone tried the 12 twist and run them around 3200?

75 Amax is a long bullet - not going to come close to stabilizing in a 1:12 barrel.

I had a .22/250 that I was in love with. . .but some person fancied her a whole lot, and stole her out of the front seat of my truck while I went in to pay for my fuel! ! ! Very sad. This rifle I had made for a culling rifle, and so, to sling heavy for caliber bullets. I had a 26" 1:7 twist Hart barrel. I am a big fan of the A-Max bullets (favorite 6.5 140gr. bullet!), but I could not ever get them to shoot good out of my rig. I hear that they DO NOT like being juiced over 2800/2900 FPS in .224 caliber. . .not sure, they just didn't seem to stay together? ? ? I was getting velocities in the 3200/3250 FPS. Maybe if I shot a reduced load or maybe had a slower twist rate barrel they may have performed differently. . .again, not sure. I tried other bullets and finally settled on the 75gr. Swift Scirocco II. Powders that I used for my 308 Winni worked great and gave the best velocities+accuracy. They were; H4831sc, Varget and IMR4064 in max charge weights of 31 to 33.5 grains (work up to these charge weights!). So, maybe in the 12 twist rate barrel you speak of it may perform better. . .I think it is going to be to long to stabilize though. The 55 to 65/68 grain pills would shoot good.

1:12 is a no go on them. 1:9 minimum twist rate for the 75's. I have a 26" 1:8 McGowen and shoot the 80's to 3220 with 35g of Power Pro 2000MR. Ring steel at 1000 yards with only 28 MOA of elevation. Headshot a doe at 220 yards with it. 22-250 with the heavy bullets is a great combo but you do need the barrel twist to get there.

All good! Thanks guys.

Ill keep hold of them anyhow since Hornady have stopped production on them.

Might have to try the Barnes projectiles to see if I can get something to stop a naughty pig or two.
