New Axis 270 but need to change.

My wife doesn't like, and can't shoot my 30-06 well, at all, so she got to talking to a co-worker today, and he recommended a 270, and so she went and bought one on her lunch break today, without saying a word to me. I'm either going to keep it for myself and buy her something else, or convert this axis to something a lot more manageable for her. I was thinking about 7mm08. Any other recommendations on something a woman new to centerfire rifles, might handle/shoot better? Something other than 223, as it will be a deer rifle for her.

I picked up a 308 Precision Carbine a few weeks ago and have been hanging out in the optics and Model 10 forums. I haven't looked around in here until now and never knew what all could be done with these. I'm looking forward to doing something with this axis. I went and broke/sighted it in today. I was only able to manage about 1.5" groups. Is that about normal for a bone stock axis.

I need to look into this round more. I've noticed a lot of people talk highly about it, but I don't know much about it.

.243, .260, 7-08, or .25-06 would all work for her. And most are available in factory Axis rifles, assuming you want to stay in that line. However the .270 is very popular with the lady hunters in my neighborhood. Let her shoot it and see. Recoil is noticeably lighter than the .30-06. It would only be an issue from a bench. Using field positions, she would never notice the recoil.

My wife has a 7-08 and does just fine with it using 140gr bullets and does just fine with it. I've got a 270 and typically use 130gr bullets...recoil on both are very similar. I believe she'll do just fine with the 270, but as others have said 243 or 260 are great lower recoiling rounds. Sounds like you got a keeper if she is out buying hunting rifles on her lunch break :)

i hope she's able to shoot it well. She's wanting a bow for Christmas.

On your question of group size, both of my bone- stock axis's shoot 3 shots under an inch at 100 yds. using a mid support bench bag. Sometimes the forearm will flex and touch the barrel if you rest it farther forward. I am going to try a Boyd's classic stock on my .30-06 and will report back on the results.

I am Godfather to an 8 year-old girl who shoots my .270 Axis like a pro. I have to carry it for her in the woods, but...

Let your wife try the .270 before you go off half-cocked.

Well, it turns out that she likes it and shoots it well, and she won't let me do anything to it, but I am going to add a cheek riser.

Also, I'm pretty impressed with the 270 cartridge. I used one as well, for the first time, on a few hogs with great results. I was using 150gr. Fusions and she was shooting Barnes TTSX. Both bullets performed great.

270, 7mm-08, 25-06.... all pretty close in ever way... can't go wrong with any of them. I personally like the 7mm-08 because it's short action.
