Son-in-law has a pretty old 250-3000 that I'm going to start reloading for. Bullet will be 87 gr Speer Hot-Cor Spitzer. The Speer book calls for CCI 200, 250 primers. I have CCI magnum small rifle number 450 and CCI small rifle number 400. Will one of these work or do I need what Speer lists for their loads?

The old 250/3000 takes a LARGE rifle primer so neither the 400 or 450 will work , as their small primers , sorry , your going to have to bite the bullet and buy more primers if you can find them .

But on the up side , just about any large rifle primer will work for this loading .

Thanks for the reply.

I finally figured it out about the large primers. Couldn't find any at Cabellas, Gander or Walmart.

Large pistol primers are the same size but not recommended for use in rifle loadings as they are made of softer metal.

Large pistol and large rifle primer pockets are NOT the same...

Not sure about the pockets but the primers are the same size and my point again was they are not recommended for use in rifles.

Small rifle and pistol are virtually the same ; NOT the large.

I took the time to measure 10 each of CCI LRP and LPP? You are correct and I am guilty of tunnel vision. The circumference was identical as I already knew but the depth was .18 mm (.007 in.) less in the LPP, something I also recalled after I measured the first pistol primer. Both my forehead and my palm hurt.:apologetic: I can honestly say what was foremost in my mind is that you can "fit" a LPP primer in a rifle pocket and it will feel just like seating a rifle primer but it isn't safe. The thought that it would be seated low never crossed my mind. I also confess that I experimented using LRP for 45 Colt single shot rifle loads. That was a few years ago. I had to use some firm pressure on the ram prime to seat them flush but they started and otherwise seated just like LPP's. I sold the rifle and never repeated the loads. Thanks for the taking the time to reply.
