Pre 81 BLR in 308. It has killed everything from moose and bear to rabbits and ground squirrels. Light, easy pointing it just fits.

Model 600 Remington, 338/08. Not much of a pelt gun, but short, fast, and accurate.

Rem 600 was an awesome rife, yours have a laminated stock, or was that the 660 ?

For varmints and foul weather deer my savage 25-06. For nice weather tree stand hunting I inherited a mint Sako L61R in 30-06 that is my real baby of all firearms. Paper or prone groundhogs without much walking my heavy-like-anvil savage 22-250.

I have several . . . . but my "go to" gun, when needed quick and I don't care about minor scratches, etc., My 270 with 140 Accubonds usually does the job. One of my first rifles, one of my cheapest (Savage), and it's definitely one of my most accurate out to 300 yards. It's the lightest rifle I have. My FCP 308 usually is not far behind, just depends on what I am doing.

If pig hunting, my 338 Edge goes with me. Don't use this gun on any other Louisiana game, unless you just want it destroyed.

No matter what you shoot with the edge, it will put the hurt on !

Non laminated. Currently in a synthetic MPI stock. The magnum versions in 6.5 Rem Mag and 350 Rem Mag had the laminated stock. Currently dealing on a 600 in 350 that's 98%. I'd really like to add that to my stable.

Where on these forums are folks talking about combat stuff ?

Well everybody has a favorite go to rifle, maybe on for varmints and one for larger game ... whats yours ?

Reading is fundamental.
The question was to the point

The original question posed was what is your "go to" gun......obviously
you don't like my response. And yeah, I read the OP's opening question. MY
"go to " gun is different from yours. P.A.

Ya know it's funny, with all the rifles I have the Hog Hunter is just awesome. I can use the 308 version for deer, hogs or even elk. Loaded with 125's it will smack a predictor at a few hunted yards too.

I put a 1-3 Variable Weaver on mine as my intent is a low profile hike around gun Witha wide FOV for pig hunting. For me the only thing that would top this for game hunting at 300 yds or less would be a 338 Federal, IMHO a great cartridge that some company should really push and sell its benifits.

Just my opinion :-)

FWIW, and my opinion is just that . . . Whenever I am asked this question, my go to gun, for some reason I always respond with my "hunting gun of choice".

Some have answered this question with "my Barrett 50".

Many have asked what is my home protection gun of choice. Or do I have a CWP and what do I carry.

The OP's opening statement: Well everybody has a favorite go to rifle, maybe on for varmints and one for larger game ... whats yours ?

I took this statement as one referring to hunting.

I read the opening title, not the summary of how he broke that down.
I responded to that and not the particulars in his post . My bad, mea... mea...., culpa.

Mine is like one other posted here. My LH 110 in the old '06, in blued steel.

http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n82/handirifle/2013Deer2_zpsbb6cdf08.jpg

I use the Barnes 168gr TTSX, and nothing has taken a step yet, after being introduced to the Barnes. This pic was this years offering. Entry hole is just ahead of the scope, under the rifle. I would like to have tried for 2, but We were flying out of state the last week of season, booooo.

Mine is topped with a Leupold VX I 2x7, cause it's what I could afford in that line, and has great eye relief. I have it set up with a synthetic stagger feed stock, low rings and a 1/4" Kick Eze glue on cheek pad that aligns my eye perfectly with the scope, without having to think about it. I have pretty high cheekbones and it often means I end up with poor cheek weld. So the pad fixed that and makes shooting more pleasant as well. I also installed a Kick Eze recoil pad.

Sometimes I think I might like a 24" fluted barrel instead of the 22" factory sporter, but then the old question keeps coming back, WHY? This one is accurate enough for me, and it's free, so that is a pretty strong argument. I had to send the scope back to Leupold cause the power adjustment turret took a LOT of effort to turn. I also had a pair of Windriver binoculars, imported by Leupold, backed by their warranty. The bino's would not focus properly.

They repaired the scope, and replaces the bino's with a new set, that are Leupold's. Yee haw! They are much nicer than the ones I sent in.

Unless it's a varmint, it will always be my '06 I grab for a hunting trip.

There is a lot to be said about a simple rifle that just works, nothing fancy, just gets the job done.

My last two hogs were shot with a old Remington ADL 700, it is a nice looking gun, simple wood, 22 inch barrel. Loaded her up with 165gr Bitter Root Bear Claws and as they say "the rest is history"

Today I would use Barnes TTSX 150gr'ers in my '06 .... the same bullets I would use in my Hog Hunter 308. I don't think the hogs or ? will notice the difference between the Barnes and the Bear Claws :- )
