Probably a dumb question but the receiver on the small shank and large shank have the same diameter? My interrogation is if the large shank use the same receiver this one is thinner because you have to remove more material for the bigger shank so what's the advantages if you have a larger shank in a thinner receiver vs a small shank in a thicker receiver???

Advantage? Who said anything about advantage?

The barrel contains the pressure. The thickness of the action at the threads is not that much of a deal. We are talking .031 per side(edit) difference between the large and small shank.

And the Savage PTA.

Good catch. I forgot all the target action variants.

To the OP,

All the actions have the same OD. Only the ID is different. What it does is give a little more meat on the barrel. But less meat on the action tennon and barrel nut.

Also, the tennon area of the action it heat treated, the barrel tennon is not. My brain tells me that a small shank setup has more of the heat treated material and less of the non. Large shank would have less of the heat treated material, and more of the non-treated. Advantage to the small shank (IMHO).
