View Full Version : Barrel Issue

I ordered a barrel and received it five months later. I installed and head spaced the barrel. The threads are exposed about 1/8" pass (outside) the nut. It should work but I do not like the threads being exposed. Any ideas on the cause for this or what I should do if anything?

What brand? Assuming that you have the headspace correct, it just looks bad. It shouldn't hurt anything. That is crappy work though.

+1 what brand ? Don't like the look's of that, can you cut some thread's off ? Like to see a pic without the wrench.

large shank with the thinner nut?
thicker lug would hide a bit more.

Agree, it looks like crap.

I would definately have a dialog with whoever sold you the barrel or the maker. Yeah, you could take an 1/8" off the barrel, but that would entail rechambering and that's another $100.00 out the door. What caliber is it? Would you have enough meat left to safely rechamber?

Assuming that the recoil lug is even installed at all.

Dual recoil lugs would be a real conversation piece at the range.

Don't want to throw the maker under the bus. He is willing to make it right and pay the shipping both ways. One of Jim's thicker recoil lugs has helped out and I should be OK. The headspace is right, checked with it with a Go and no-go gauge plus a re-sized case. The length of threads is + 0.077" more than a factory barrel. The real test will be shortly when I light it off.

I really don't think the bullet is going to know that the threads it is passing under extend forward of the barrel nut!

If the threads are only .077" longer than factory, and you have a thicker lug in, and it still shows .125" threads sticking out, it makes me wonder if it's chambered deep enough. Does the barrel need screwed in nearly as far as the factory barrel to get the headspacing correct? I wouldn't shoot it quite yet until I fully understood what was wrong.

you did drop a case in the chamber while it was off, right?http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v675/gcidso123/savage/2mzlaja-1.jpg

I guess if we don't hear from him in the next few days we can assume the worst?

Did you find out anything?

I am guessing that possibly the bolt head was swapped also, maybe allowing the barrel to be set out further from the original end of the bolt body.
