View Full Version : I did a really STUPID thing!

Yesterday I put together one of my rebuilds. I took a left hand SS 16 action and screwed in a new take off 22" SS .308 Win barrel, set the headspace, adjusted the trigger, and dropped the barreled action into a Tupperware stock.

This morning while getting my stuff together for the range, I checked the ammo as I always do. My 168grn SMK loads would not chamber. WTF??!! I checked the OAL.....No hay problemo. I took a round apart and check the case for proper sizing....still no problem. Then I glanced at the muzzle. That hole looks kinda small! Well, the barrel nomenclature was obscured as often is with a re-barrel, so I disassembled the rifle.

You guessed it! I had picked up the wrong barrel yesterday and had screwed in a .243 barrel instead of a .308. The headspace had checked out as both calibers use the same go-gauge.

Do I feel STUPID? I don't think I'm going to the range today. I'm sure that there would be a major flinch each time I pulled the trigger.

This past weekend my brother used the wrong reload info in his Shilen 6mm. He used a 4831 load with 4064 powder. After the smoke and smell cleared, he extracted the case and never did find the primer. He'll start writing EVERYTHING down from now on.

In short........you're not alone.

I just love it when I find out that I am not the only one that does these super intelligent tricks fortunately no harm done

I am still curious though......I wonder what the BC of a 168grn .243 SMK would be?

There is only one way to find out. Let us know if you survive the testing.

Just kidding!

I still have to be really careful with 308 brass necked to something else though.

I once spent an hour trying to set the headspace on a 243 barrel with a fired 22.250 case.

My best was installing and headspacing a barrel and then looked down at the recoil lug sitting on the bench.

I know a character that spent a few minutes trying figure out why a cartridge jammed against the left side of the action instead of ejecting out the port as designed.

Now, thats not really bad, but its kinda embarrassing rip'm a bolt apart in front of a half dozen guys laughing like a bunch of school girls especially when he was teaching them how to setup a bolt.

( lets see, vent hole up, front baffle guide on the right.... GOT IT!).

Oh, ok. Let's talk "STUPID". Bet none of you ever did this.

Chambered and fired a .308 out of a 25-06 barrel. ::)

Blew the extractor out of the bolt head, and fused case with the bolt head. Lived to tell about it to.

You win!!!!

Abuddy of mine was shooting his 6br one day and complaining that it seemed to shoot a tad better the day before. I picked up a piece of fired brass and it said 6ppc on the head stamp. Still shot about a half inch group but, it ruind several rounds of good brass.

I know a guy, who in his very early days of tinkering with firearms, extracted a loaded round and the round came apart, leaving the bullet lodged in the throat. Thinking (it's only in the throat, it's not actually in the bore yet, how stuck can it be?), and instead of going out to the garage to get a cleaning rod, he simply dropped a pencil down the barrel.
point first.
many of you already see where this is going, but he didn't.
of course, when the two objects met, pointed ends towards each other, they each skewed off to the side, in effect shimming against each other.
it was AT THIS POINT that he got his lazy butt up and got a cleaning rod, inserted it into the muzzle, and tapped away with a hammer.

that bullet (and that pencil) are STILL in that damned barrel.
