View Full Version : Selecting a die set for 6.5mm Creedmoor reloading

I'm trying to grope my way through the equipment shopping lists for new reloaders...
I'm building a 6.5mm Creedmoor based on a Savage Target action, timed/tuned by Fred at Sharpshooter Supply... Brux barrel.
Looking for a high quality die set for reloading... Not an 'official' benchrest shooter... yet.... ... but I'm only wanting to have to buy each item once. Don't mind spending the few extra $$$'s initially to avoid having to upgrade later.
My only experience reloading was just a little bit in the early '70's...
What should I look for in a set of dies? Recommendations?
Thanks, all-
Wes

After trying different and different die combinations, for straight ammo, I've settled on the Forster dies - the full length sizer and micrometer seater. I've been so impressed with the concentricity of my loaded ammo, with these, that I've gone and changed most of my die sets out to these. Problem is I don't think they make them for the Creedmor.
Next choice would be Reddings. For max flexibility, with regard to neck tension, I like the Type S FL Bushing dies. The standard seater is good, but, I've heard good, good things about their competition seater. The standard FL die is very good, as well.
A couple of years ago, I started some data collecting, believing the sizer die made the difference in good, straight, ammo. Tried all different sorts of sizing dies - every one gave me neck run out (resized, unloaded brass) <=.001". I found the seater die quality makes the all the difference in the world. So, if you're forced into a choice, get a standard FL die and spend the $$$ on an excellent, competition quality, seating die. (I never thought I'd hear myself say that....). Also, for verification of your loaded ammo, get a concentricity gauge.
Just my 2 cents.....

For what it's worth, I grabbed the Hornady dies for my Creedmoor, and have found runout to be .001 or under on most of my reloaded rounds.

Looks like Forester doesn't make any dies for the 6.5mm Creedmoor...

I think I've kind of narrowed my selection down to these:
http://www.lrplongrangeprecision.com/shop/6-5mm-creedmoor-typs-s-match-full-die-set/
or
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/160240/hornady-match-grade-new-dimension-bushing-full-length-sizer-2-die-set-65-creedmoor?cm_vc=subv1292633
or

Any comments/thoughts/further suggestions??
Thanks-
