question about my .270... spent cartridge jammed and...bolt problem ensued...

I was making sure my .270 was sighted in for first weekend of gun season and my Savage jammed and I could not get the spent brass out of the chamber at the range.

I stood my rifle up, bolt open and tried to gently bounced it on the rubber stock pad to see if I could get it to drop. I had no rod. It would and the rear baffle (as I have learned) came loose and I took it off. I could not get my bolt to close or get the spent round out, so I packed it in.

I eased my cleaning rod down the barrel to push out the brass. The primer had blown out and I could not find it. The brass came out simply enough, but I can't close the bolt. I have printed out an exploded view and found some help on disassembly of the bolt if I need to do so.

Anyone have any wisdom before I begin work tonight? thanks

What ammo or was it a handload ??

Headscape okay ??

My first guess is too hot of a load or bad ammo.
2nd guess is a carbon ring and the ammo is okay.

How long since its been cleaned ?

With the current bolt problem you could have blown some crap into the lug area, but other than that I would not want to guess.

Since the bolt wont close you probably should have a gunsmith look at it.

First welcome to the site.
Put the baffle back on and make sure the bolt is cocked, it will not insert if it isn't. There are photos and how to's here on the site a quick search should bring them up.
Also make sure all the pieces of blown primer are out of the action before you put it back together.

Make sure the extractor pawl is not stuck open or better yet make sure it's still on the bolt face

Exactly, It sounds like the bolt came uncocked when you bumped the butt stock trying to remove the stuck brass.

Sounds like a HUGE overcharge to me. Was this a handload? Has the barrel been swapped, there isn't enough info here to help. If you're blowing primers that is a load you should not hunt with, factory or not, something is wrong.

Also a possibility of a barrel obstruction if this was the first outing after being stored for a season. Spiders and other critters love to nest in bores when they can. Even a small spider in the bore could generate an overpressure situation under the worst possible conditions. Blitzfike

Was the chamber wet with oil for that first shot? Bad things can happen when shooting a wet chamber, even with factory ammo.
