A Modest Proposal


Let's gather about 30 A&B barrels in 223 Remington (yes, that is not the best caliber for anything, but they seem to be plentiful). Thirty barrels ought to be enough for a decent statistical sample. The barrels could be a combination of new and used (not abused). Could include both sporter and varmint contours.

We then need to gather about 30,000 rounds of ammo. The ammo could be a mix of Remington, Winchester, Federal, Black Hills, etc factory ammo. We would need enough of each variation (SKU) to shoot five 5-shot groups from each rifle barrel.

Fred could supply us one timed and trued action with a benchrest type stock.

There is an indoor 100-yard shooting range in Midland, Texas. We could meet there and spend a week shooting each combination of barrel and ammo and measuring groups.

We could then definitively say what the expectations of an A&B 223 barrel should be.


Yes, someone needs to bring some Hoppes.

Sounds like a $20,000 endeavor to find a Average... that would in no way guarantee or even predict what a individual barrel will do. But, a Hell of a fun time ! Stupid crap like this is why it's Great to be Americans !

We just bought three power plants near Midland so I always have an excuse to go.

I've always dreamed of getting several trailer homes, stitching them together end-to-end, and having a live-in range. I guess the main limitation on how much distance you could achieve would be the mid-range rise of the bullet versus the ceiling height of the trailers. How cool would it be to sit in the middle of a 500yd range, chilling with a beer and watching TV, with your head directly between the shooter's muzzle and the target and listening to the bullets whistling a couple feet overhead?
