I have an old Savage 340 E in 22 Hornet. Was wondering if it would be possible to rechamber it to a 223 Remington? Hornet ammo is a bit spendy and hard to come by in my parts. I'm not interested in mail ordering ammo and I already reload for a 223. I was wondering if the 22 Hornet action and bolt was the same size as the 223 or if it was a bit smaller. T realize that I will need to replace the bolt head as well. Any ideas?

You would have less money and less headaches involved by just buying a new Axis.

The 340 is no where close to the 110 action. You can't get off the shelf parts to swap out bolt heads or barrels. The bolt head is wrong, the mag would be wrong, the barrel isn't something you will find easily. Buy a new rifle and keep said rifle as is or sell it.

Yeah I found all the parts I would need from Numerich online. Looking at about $170 for the parts and that is about what the gun is worth. Might just abandon that thought.

If you reload for a 223, why not just get the dies to reload the 22 hornet?
Dies are a lot cheaper than the parts to convert.

Around here, Walmart will sell you a brand new .223 Axis for $257. Mine is a solid sub-MOA shooter with cheapo Silver Bear ammo. Unless you are just a glutton for frustration, I'd say the extra $87 would be well worth it! ;-)
