Hi all from south eastern TN I just acquired a new to me Savage 110 in 270 cal that is what I believe a package gun as it has a scope that is mounted but no sling (yet) anyways the previous owner said he had never shot it so I'm taking it out to the range tommorrow to set the scope . The scope has no markings on it other than it is a 3-9 variable . Will this be a good setup for a beginner ? What bullet weight should I use to sight it in ? I will be mainly hunting white tail deer and maybe hogs with it . Any info is appreciated .

If it is a solid scope, 3-9 is all you need for eastern white tail and hogs. I would begin with 130-140gr bullets since that is what the 270 was originally designed for. You might consider the Remington 130gr Core Lokt as a starter. Not top of the line for sure but it uses a flat base bullet and is fairly accurate in my Savage 270. Reloading the 270 is the way to go for great accuracy and good bullet selection.

I have shoot 3/4in groups at 100yds out of my 110e .270 with 150gr core lokt. And my buddy had a few 150gr Winchester so I threw those in and noticed quite a bit difference in recoil.
My dad swears by the core lokt in his 110 30-06 and has for years and has taken many white tail deer here in Missouri over the past 16yrs
