How is a straight wall rimless cartridge headspaced? I know it relies on the case mouth but, what if the case is too short to begin with?

You answered your own first question. For your second one: then you have a problem.

If the case mouth wont do it, you have to hope the extractor holds it. lot of semi auto handguns have extractors that hold the case very well as a secondary measure.
