Cheap $450 Hog Hunters can be transformed quite effectively for little $$. $200 Bobby Hart LRP stock, some fluting, a comp and some Cerakote is all you need. I think I have less than a grand into it including optics. :cool:

I like it, a lot! What rail is that? I have an EGW on the way and just trying to get an idea how tall it will be. Who did your barrel fluting? And I'm guessing that's a northland recoil lug and barrel nut by the bright finish?

Yes an EGW 20 MOA rail. Kampfield Custom did the flutes. He is only 30 minutes from me and does world class work. He took a full pound off my 26" bull McGowen.

yes i have boughtmy second Hog Hunter in 308, next week will buy one in 223.

The hog hunter is a real sleeper for sure.

You can by a Stevens for a little less money, but then you need to put in another $100 for a trigger.

If you get a hog hunter you get a threaded barrel and an accu trigger for a very good price.

I will buy another Hog Hunter for sure !

The real winner on the Hog Hunter IMO is the Medium Varmint 20" barrel. In .308 it is the ideal length and contour as it's light, stiff, accurate and has the right twist. The threading is a real bonus. The rifle as configured above shoots like a .223 with the JP comp. It will shoot .50 groups all day and easily run out to 1000 with good match ammo. This one just loves both the 175 SMK and the 178 A-Max in Lake City brass over either RE15, Varget or Power Pro 2000MR. I get it running 2675 FPS.

The whole rifle weighs about 11lbs with Optics and bipod. I have a MDT LSS chassis on order which is supposed to be here end of the month. This Hog Hunter barreled action is going into that for hunting and my 22-250 is going into the Bobby Hart LRP stock. It's in my XLR right now but XLR is getting a new .260 set up coming from Jim at NSS. Criterion barrel, Savage Varmint SS action, NSS lug and nut. Thats going to be a shooter!!!

Is that the stock barrel for the Hog Hunter? I know you had it fluted, but I don't see the iron sight holes.

Yep stock medium varmint from the Hog Hunter. It's a great barrel as it's lighter than the standard heavy Varmint and already threaded. I took off the iron sights, filled the holes with JB weld, sanded smoth. After fluting I then blasted and Cerakoted the barrel and action

I bought that same stock, I was very impressed with how well the action fit and the finish of the Bobby Hart Stock. It is such a big upgrade form the stock my rifle came with.

I'm assuming that is a Cooley Muzzle Break. I have the same one on my Hog Hunter and I'm itching to try it out tomorrow.

I have heard great things about that break, I purchased the large size to try to remove as much recoil as possible, have you shot 150's and can you get 2850 out of your gun using that weight bullet ?

I plan on using mine just for hog hunting and being that I live in Kalifornia, I'll be using solid copper barns bullets.

Have you tried the Cooley Break and how does it work for you ?

Great looking rifle. I would love to put something similar together in 223 perhaps. In trying to price something comparable, I can't figure out how you only have about a grand in it though?

$40 EGW rail
$250 Atlas? Bipod and adapter
$50-100? Brake
$30? Carakote
$?? Barrel fluting
$200-??? Rings/Optics/Caps (Primary Arms?)

What am I missing? I figure at least 1k before rings and optic. Care to provide a parts list?

Going back through everything, I suppose removing or going with a knock off bipod along with a economy scope could make it work.

Yep it's a Cooley and they work great. I run them on my AR's too. I have a 155 SMK load I use (since I got a box cheap). It's over 2900 with 50g of Power Pro 2000MR.

Dan I did not count the Atlas in my calculation. Your numbers are correct minus the bipod. I did the Cerakote myself so yes about $30. The scope is a $160 4-16x44 Primary Arms in $35 Warne steel rings on the $40 EGW rail. The fluting ran me $130. $80 for the JP Cooley comp. So just over a grand with no bipod.

Thanks! After I started typing my post, I figured it would be pretty close without the bipod and with a primary arms scope. I originally was figuring a lot more in the scope and rings. Very nice rifle.

And how do you like that optic? I generally hear good things about primary arms.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to seeing your MDT LSS chassis. I've been thinking about building a lighter .223 bench gun for my kids to learn on (uber adjustability is what I'm looking for because they are petite. XLR and PDC chassis are also in the running).

Love them. I have two of these and one of the 4-14 FFP's. Best budget scope on the market. Great glass, good mechanicals and really tough. I have a Vortex 6-24 PST FFP that is awesome but not sure if it's 4 times more awesome. The Primary Arms get the job done for very little money. I move scopes around alot and I can't afford four or five expensive optics. So I have a couple expensive ones and lots of these. :cool:

I love my XLR. It has my long range 22-250 in it now but it's going .260 Remington. I'm facinated by the LSS because of the small size and ajustable AR stock. I figured it would be a perfect match with the 20" Hog Hunter. I'll post pics as soon as I get it.

The Primary Arms scope is a great scope for the $ spent. I wish they had a 16x ffp available.
