I have a model 12 FV chambered in 22-250 and i want to re-barrel it with a 1 in 9 twist to shoot the 75gr A-Max, my question is has anyone else done this or have one? Also if someone has done this, how did it shoot? Thank's for any input

i have a 9 twist 22x250 ai in which i shoot 69 gr sierras. im happy with the way it shoots those but ive not tried 75s.
i also have an 8 twist 6x284 i use when i want to shoot longer with heavier bullets. a 243 ai would also work well.
if the gun shoots well presently i personaly would be using it as is and be considering a 6mm. the 75s might be good
but no match for a 105.

Do yourself a favor and just go with a 1-8 twist (easier to find in aftermarket barrels anyway). Even with the 1-8 twist you'll still be able to shoot most bullets down into the 45-50gr range and it will better stabilize the heavier/longer 75-80gr bullets.

That said, I had one of the first fast twist (1-9) Model 12 LRPV's to leave the factory (was actually a pre-production model) and it shot the 75gr Amax's amazingly well. The 80 grain Amax's had just come out at that time and I gave them a try, but they didn't shoot nearly as well as the 75's did. It would shoot the 52/53gr Match bullets like a house of fire as well if you like to play the short games on occasion to.

You should also consider the AI chamber if you are going to order a barrel (if you reload). Additional case capacity, slower powders, better performance from the heavy 22 slugs.

I have one I'm using right now for Coyotes as well as long range target out to 1K. It's a 26" MgGowen 1:8t bull in an XLR chassis. I agree don't go with 9 and limit yourself to just the 75 Amax. The bigger 80 and 90 bullets are where it's at. My load for the 80 Amax in 22-250 is 34.5g of Alliant Power Pro 2000MR in Lapua brass, BR2 primers seated to 2.60. I'm getting 3200 FPS out of my 26" barrel. Consistent hits out to 1000 at only 27 MOA and .30 groups at 100.

Thanks for the input, i was actually looking at the Mcgowen 1:8 also. They have the savage pre-fit, so that was the route that i was going to take. Has anyone used varget or rl15 with these heavy pills, i have 10lbs of ea powder and want to use it.

My 9 twist 22-250 loves the 75 Amax over IMR4350. Trouble is I couldn't find any more than the partial box I was given, so I've been shooting the 69grain Sierra MatchKing BTHP and they do very well too. As soon as I can find the Amax again I'm getting a 600 brick of them. Once this barrel is gone though I'm getting an 8 Twist AI version to replace it with just because.

My 26" barrel is shooting the 75 gr. Amax only ~200 FPS slower than my 22" barrel 25-06 pushes the 75 grain Vmax, but with much less recoil, and 19.7 grains less powder.

You need to hotrod that 22-250Ai load a little to get it up to speed...

I'm pushing 80gr Nosler's at just under 3400fps through my 26" Douglas with 39.4 grains of H4350 over a BR2 primer in Norma brass. Granted, all my cases have an ejector mark on the case head but the bolt lift isn't any harder than normal. Same load I've been using for 9 years and I haven't had a single issue in that time, but it's definitely on the warm side and one you'd want to slowly work up to. Drop at 1k should be around 25.6 MOA (calculated) but the furthest I've ever had the chance to shoot it was 800 yards and that was so long ago I couldn't even guess as to what the dope was.

I have a 22-250 and I'm also looking at loads for it, Trouble is the Hornady have "Temporarily" suspended the A-Max line in quite a few Calibres.

All I read is how great these pills are, yet Hornady have chosen to stop production for a while... the 80Gr A Max doing 3200 looks a perfect load for the Goats and Varmints I'll be trying to nail out to 700 Yrds but getting the Bullets may prove difficult here in NZ.

Ah you're killing me! I'd love to have that stash of 75's. WHEN they become available again, I'll be sure to get enough of them to wear out a barrel with.

So if I told you that I've been sitting on these since 2006 you'd probably hate me more then, right? LOL

You naughty boy!

Why have you held them so long? I mean lets be honest here, they need to be shot. I'll pm you my address.... It's obvious you don't care for them :p
