Hello,
First time posting, very informative site.

I have a Savage 12 series Varmint with a 1 in 9 twist (.223). I have had excellent results with Hornady A-Max 75gr using 23.8 gr of Varget powder, I have shot competition from 300 - 500 yrds and have shot out to 1000 yards with this load combination.

My question is, is the 75gr the maximum I can use in a 1 in 9 twist or can I go to a 80gr? Problem is Hornady temporarily suspended production of the 75gr A-max. So I'm looking for a replacement and I see Berger has a 70 and 80gr bullet, any thoughts to if I can use an 80gr in this rifle with a 1 in 9 twist?

Thanks for your help!

homefrontsniper,

Thanks for the offer, much appreciated! I started looking through my supplies after reading your post and found around 50 or so 80gr A-MAX that I forgot I had. Alas, Hornady has a temporally hold on production with these ones also.

You'll just need to test them. Some barrels will and some won't. I was able to shoot the 80 Amax in my 1:9 with no key holing at 100. Never got to shoot it farther but assumed it would be fine. The 80 Hornady and Berger are a good bit longer than the 75 Amax.

give it a go and find out. Its well written that 1/9 doesnt favor heavier pills......but Ive seen alot of "well written" info to be false
load-em up and shoot-em..........after all.............its always fun working up different loads a?

..... always with the weight and twist questions.....
Unless you are making a very generalized statement, WEIGHT is almost irrelevant to what you are asking. Bullet LENGTH is what you need a stabilizing RPM for.
If you want a good guess, as to what will or won't be stable in your air, use this link:

Look up the desired bullet lengths on the left, then come back and input the specifics of you atmosphere, etc.

As was said, and important to remember, not all barrels are equal. And VERY few twists are perfect, quite common to vary from stated by a 1/2 twist.
