Why no Savage Axis factory offerings in 7mm RM or 300 WM? Is there a safety/technical issue? Will a Savage magnum bolt head work on a Savage Axis bolt? I was looking at the feasiblility of building a Savage Axis in 7mm RM.

I think so JP. There was a discussion about this the other day and Jim said yes. Not sure if it was a long action or shrot action BH though.

IIRC all Axis bolt heads are SA length bolt heads regardless of whether it has a LA or SA magazine. To do a Magnum on an Axis a LA bolt head that has had the stem shortened to the same length as a SA head is needed. Any local machine shop should be able to handle the task. I was thinking that using a factory WSM head would cause an issue some how, can't remember for sure but I was thinking that there isn't a firing pin assembly for the Axis that would work with the thicker lugs of the WSM bolt head.
