Reading this thread gets me all excited about my build. I have a 10 FCP with a DBM and I am going to order a barrel for it soon, either the 260 Rem or 6.5x47 Lapua. I would love to hear a range report.

Range report is going to be a while. Still need the stock to arrive.

Plus I will be waiting for the Viper PST to become available.

I may use the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 I ordered for my 700 to get some range time with the Savage .260. :)

If my barrel shows up this week I may post pics by the weekend.

Glass and pillar bedded 112 VLP, EGW picatinny, Burris Signature rings, Nikon Monarch ED 8-32x50mm.

Got a bunch of different 6.5 bullets to try.

Make sure to give us a range report...even if you don't have the PST and have to use the plain Viper. Looks like it should be an awesome rig!!

My first build is on page 6 of the rifle pics. Amazing what you can do with a $350 wally world rifle.

No. Its where they sanded it smooth at the shop.

The last half inch of the barrel channel was touching the barrel so I cleaned it up a bit.

How does that Rayhill stock fit you? I like the A5 style grip. Is this similar. it sure looks like it might be. Was that a Money Saver stock that you worked over was it a ready to paint model? Just curious how much work it took to get it ready for paint if it was a money saver option.

I love it. The LOP is perfect. The grip is just right for my big hands.

It is the money saver version. Most of the work will be on the top around the barrel channel and the action. Some light filling and sanding then knock down the seam along the bottom. I'll hit it with some primer and paint and be done. I am kind of neat so it will probably take a few days to get it where I want it.

Very nice project. Are you shooting in a competition or just for pleasure. The 260 is very interesting to me. I was shooting a 6mm-284, but never could get any accuracy out of the gun at velocities exceeding what I could get out of m 243 win. This was not a Savage rifle by the way. All four of my Savages shoot wonderful. I have been thinking of a tactical rifle in 260. I am very curious about the velocities you get.

It will hopefully be for competition. If I can get into the comps they have at FT. Knox.

I will post a range report soon.

Sure looks good even though you're not finished with her. Give us a range report once you finish all the details...bet she'll be a shooter!

Here are some pics of the day at the range. I shot some cheap hunting ammo to "break-in" the barrel.

These photos are with 142gr Sierra MK over IMR4350. The numbers posted are the amount of powder used.

My Savage .260 has a 28" McGowen varmint taper barrel, in a SSS LVT stock. I get about 2840fps with 42.7gr of RL17 driving a 139gr Scenar (Remington brass, CCI BR-2), and ~0.5-0.6MOA accuracy on average (mind you this is my first centerfire bolt gun). 41.0gr and 41.5gr also give me good accuracy, maybe better, so I will revisit those loads and chrono them... if I can get around 2800fps I'll use on of those instead of 42.7. Best 5 shot group with 42.7gr of RL17 so far is 1.2" at 300yds on a relatively calm day.

I really like the .260. I'm planning to build another .260, though not a Savage. Will be a "more tactical" build with Stiller action, Manners stock and a shorter barrel, suppressor, etc. I thought about 6.5x47 Lapua, just for something different, but it doesn't seem to get me anything other than nicer brass, while costing a lot more (for brass, new dies, etc.).

Savage_Jake,

Great looking setup. Range report is great as well. I really like the stock. I am building a .223 and was going to get a B&C, but after looking at your new rig I might change my mind. How hard is it to finish it out?

Again congrats on the finished rig.

Dang!

Nice setup. I have also built a 260 recently but on the "cheaper" side. So far I have only switched out the barrel with a 26" Shilen. Some say you can't or shouldn't glass bed the plastic stock but I didn't listen. :)

Well I did it anyway and as of Sunday morning, my "cheap" rifle shot 4 groups in the .4s and 5 groups in .5s (all 5 shot groups at 100yds). Oh and this is only with a single load using H4831sc! So not sure if I want to upgrade my stock now. ;D

Oh did I mentioned I only spent about $22 bucks to glass bed my stock? LOL

btw, your rig is truely nice looking!

Hey Joseph,

I was the one that sent you the email asking about how you painted your stock. If you remember.

I have decided to paint it one solid color then hit it with some Krylon webbing paint.

As for the groups. While I am very happy with the way it shoots, I feel it can do better. When I get a chance to go to my parents I will be able to really concentrate on dialing it in. I go to the famous Knob Creek and its very distracting when you have 15-20 people rattling off AKs and ARs, throwing hot steel and brass at you.
